INDIANAPOLIS - After falling to No. 9 Lindenwood (8-2, 8-2 GLVC) back on March 13, the No. 14 UIndy men's lacrosse team (8-2, 8-2) hosted the Lions for a rematch on Saturday. The Greyhounds celebrated six seniors at Key Stadium during the contest, starting the game aggressive and taking the 11-9 victory. The senior squad for the team consisted of Kansai Garey, Jordan McKenzie, Jack Belobrajdic, Tanner Tracy, Nate Webber and Duncan Weir.
INS & OUTS
The Hounds came out on offensive with one of their most overwhelming starts this season, netting five-straight unanswered goals to kick off the game. Garey was able to knock in the first shot in the contests's first two minutes of action, Drew Billig assisting on that shot and scoring a pair of his own goals for the early lead. Austin Barnett would be a stone wall for the Greyhounds' defense, the goalkeeper not allowing a single goal in the first quarter and collecting four saves against Lindenwood.
The Lions were able to come out of the gate in the second quarter to bring the game within a handful of goals, taking the score to 7-5 before Brian Robb tossed a pass to lead Billig into a goal in the final 30 seconds of the first half. With a three-goal lead heading into the second half of action, the trio of Robb, Billig and Garey each were credited a score in the third quarter to extend the lead to six. With 12 more shots coming from Lindenwood in the fourth quarter, Barnett and the defense were able to collect five more saves in the contest to hold on a late-game surge from the Lions.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Saturday's win against Lindenwood makes this the fourth ranked win against a ranked opponent this season.
- The Lions' 50 shots is the most the Greyhounds have faced this season.
- Billig's six points ties a career-high for the junior, amounting four goals and two assists in the win.
HOUND BYTES
Assistant coach Austin Grimes on the senior's impact for the program …
"The senior group we celebrated today was a lot of guys who came back for the extra year after losing last season. This group is made up of men that have been here from almost the start of the program, along with some transfers who took a chance on a young program. We can't thank them enough for wanting to come back this year to finish what they started."
UP NEXT
UIndy will have one more game to complete next week before their run in the 2021 GLVC Men's Lacrosse Tournament, taking on Davenport up north in Michigan. That contest in Grand Rapids will take place on Wednesday, April 28 at 2 p.m.
