Hounds Set to Host NCAA Women’s Golf Regional

CARMEL, Ind. – The UIndy women's golf team opens play at the NCAA Division II East Regional next week. The Greyhounds earned the top seed and will play host to eight other teams and four individuals at nearby Prairie View Golf Club. The field will play a practice round Sunday, May 2, with the tournament officially running Monday through Wednesday, May 3-5.

UIndy has enjoyed unprecedented success at the East Regional, winning seven of eight region titles since 2012. Additionally, the Hounds have hosted their own fall invitational at Prairie View each of the last six years; they have won five of those tournaments, including a 29-stroke win in the season opening last September.

"We couldn't be more excited," Head Coach Brent Nicoson admitted. "We're anxious to get back to Prairie View for the NCAA Regional. We know the course well and our group really loves to compete there.

"It's great to host the regional here in the Indy area, and we would love to have some Greyhound fans come support our young ladies."

As the freshly-crowned GLVC champions, UIndy earned an automatic bid to the regional tournament and will be making its 14th consecutive NCAA appearance. Other automatic qualifiers include Findlay (G-MAC champ, 2 seed) Grand Valley State (GLIAC, 3) Gannon (PSAC, 7), Charleston (Mountain East, 8) and Franklin Pierce (NE10, 9). Missouri-St. Louis (4), Tiffin (5) and Wayne State (6) snagged the at-large bids.

All participants will compete through 54 holes of competition, with team and individual competition conducted concurrently. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with an advancing team moving on to the 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships, scheduled for May 11-15 at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, Mich.

On the whole, Greyhounds have won seven of eight tournaments this season, most recently capturing their ninth consecutive GLVC crown with a convincing victory at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club last weekend. They are led by two-time reigning DII Player of the Year Pilar Echeverria.

"It's been a great regular season," allowed Nicoson, "but we feel like our best is still ahead of us. We haven't quite put it all together yet, but I believe in my team and we can't wait to compete this week."
