ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis baseball team opened their weekend series at Missouri-St. Louis in dominant fashion on Friday, posting a pair of wins with 12 runs scored in each game. The Hounds improve 13-9 on the year and 11-3 in GLVC action.
GAME 1: UIndy 12, UMSL 7
The Hounds put runs on the board first, holding a 4-0 lead after the first. Ty Williams and Trey Smith both tabbed one run singles while Brandon DeWitt scored on a wild pitch and Caleb Vaughn took advantage of a throwing error to cross home.
UMSL chipped away at the deficit in the fifth with one run before a three run double in the sixth evened the game at four.
UIndy responded with a trio of runs in the top of the seventh. Will Smithey scored on a wild pitch before Smith drove in a pair of runs with a single through the left side. The Hounds added some insurance runs in the 8th, scoring five runs with two outs. Alex Vela laid down a bunt single, allowing John Carpinelli to score. Trey Smith provided the power, blasting a grand slam to left field for his second home run of the season.
Reid Werner took a no decision in his seventh start of the season, striking out four and allowing two runs off of one hit in 5.0 innings. Johnny Irish picked up his first win of the season, allowing one hit and zero runs in 0.1 innings. Alec Burnett provided 1.2 innings of relief, striking out four while holding the Tritons hitless. Burnett allowed just one baserunner while facing six.
GAME 2: UIndy 12, UMSL 1 (7 inn.)
UIndy wasted no time plating runs in the night cap, scoring four runs in both the first and second inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Isaac Bair knocked a one run double to right field before Ty Williams drove in two with a single to center. Hunter Hughes drove in the final run of the first with a sacrifice fly to right.
Smith continued his hot streak in game two, sending another bomb over the left field fence, this time for a two-run home run. Williams laced a single to right to drive in Bair followed by Carpinelli scoring on a passed ball to cap off the inning.
The fifth saw Smith and pinch hitter Jare Bujdos go back-to-back with RBI singles to extend the Hounds' lead to 11-1. Reid Rector scored the final run in the 7th on a wild pitch.
Corey Bates picked up his second win of the season, striking out four and allowing six hits and one run in 5.0 innings. Jakob Hughes closed out the final two, striking out two and holding the Tritons to one hit.
Trey Smith finished the day 6-9 with 10 RBI's, 3 runs scored and a pair of home runs.
