First Inning Success Closes Road Trip with a Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After going down in the second game on Saturday, the UIndy baseball team (19-17, 17-11 GLVC) took on the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (22-18, 18-14) for the Hounds' final road game of the regular season on Sunday. The Greyhounds' hot start was able to widen the gap far enough to seal a win, outscoring the Screaming Eagles on a final score of 7-5.

INS & OUTS
UIndy was able to bring home four different runners in the first inning, starting things off with a wild pitch. Alex Vela was able to catch a walk at his first at bat, then a wild pitch at Hunter Waning's at bat sent the shortstop across home plate. Waning then placed a sacrifice bunt over to Southern Indiana's pitcher, who was unable to field it and bring home John Carpinelli for a second run. Isaac Blair tossed a single into center field for a third unearned run in the inning, and Cale Vaughn would follow suit with a single in the same spot to send Blair around the rest of the bases.

The Hounds would have another multiple-run inning in the top of the fourth, both on Waning's at bat. The first of the two would come on a failed pickoff attempt at Vela, the third basemen not being able to handle the toss and leaving an opening for Vela to run home. Waning would hit into a sacrifice fly out to center field in a pitch soon after, but with Carpinelli advancing to third off of the error previously mentioned earlier was able to get home for another unearned run.

Xavier Rivas would be the Hounds' starting pitcher in the contest, but Alec Burnett would earn his first decision of the season after appearing in the third inning and pitching through the fifth. Burnett would strike out a trio of batters without giving up a single earned run in the contest, only allowing a batter to go around the bases once. Chaney Morgan closed out the contest for his second save on the year, the junior needing 18 pitches to seal the Hounds' 19th victory of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Vela's three runs marks a season high for the junior infielder.
- Rivas' two hits allowed is a season low in a single game.
- UIndy's seven runs on Sunday marks the 11th time this season the Hounds have totaled seven or more in a single game.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds have one more series before the end of the regular season, coming back to Greyhound Park for the season finale. The Hounds will take on Lewis next weekend, the first pitch kicking off on Friday, May 7 at 2 p.m.
