Baseball Opens Series with Walk Off Win

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis baseball team opened its regular season series finale on Friday in thrilling fashion with a walk off win over Lewis in game one.  Will Smithey provided the game-winning hit in the 4-3 victory.  The teams couldn't beat daylight in game two as it was halted after the fifth inning and will resume Saturday morning tied at two.

GAME 1: Lewis 3 – UIndy 4
Trey Smith put the Hounds on the board first with a two-run home run to left field for his team-leading sixth blast of the season.  A pitchers duel quickly developed as the two teams combined for just two base runners over the next three innings.

The Flyers made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh after a pair of hits including a one-run double.  After a one-two-three eighth, Lewis took the lead in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run to left field.

John Carpinelli drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth and moved to second as Isaac Bair was hit by a pitch.  With one out and two runners on, Caleb Vaughn laced a single up the middle, scoring Carpinelli and tying the game at three.  Will Smithey laid down a bloop single in right field, driving in pinch runner Nathan Fish and providing the Hounds with the 4-3 walk off win.

Reid Werner took a no decision in his final career start at Greyhound Park.  The Greenwood native went 8.1 innings, striking out four while not giving up any walks.  Werner gave up three runs off of six hits.

Matt Rearick picked up his first win of the season on the mound, closing out the final 0.2 innings with no hits or runs.

GAME 2 (HALTED): Lewis 2 – UIndy 2
After a two and half rain delay between games, the Hounds struck first again in game two thanks to a solo home run from Isaac Bair in the second inning.  Lewis took the lead in the fourth with a pair of one run singles.

Vaughn led off the fifth with a walk and reached third after a pair of sacrifice bunts.  Alex Vela hit a ground ball up the middle, scoring Vaughn and tying the game at two.

Corey Bates threw 5.0 innings, allowing two runs off of six hits while striking out five.

The game was halted due to darkness before the sixth inning began.
