INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis volleyball team opened the 2021 UIndy Invitational in thrilling fashion on Friday morning, topping Cedarville University in five sets. The Hounds hit .299 with three individuals reaching double figures in kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cedarville stole the first set 25-23 but UIndy bounced back to win the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-15. Trailing 16-12 in the second set, Grace Hegwood, Lauren Cullison and Elizabeth Eads combined for four straight kills to even the score at 16. Emma Jones and Hegwood put the set away with back-to-back kills.
The fourth set was a nail biter with neither team leading by more than two points at any time. Cedarville was victorious, 25-23, to force a decisive fifth set.
The Yellow Jackets led 6-4 in the fifth before UIndy rattled off six consecutive points to take a 10-6 lead. Cedarville pulled within two before Cullison sealed the win with her 21st kill of the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Cullison paced the offense with 21 kills followed by Hegwood with 16 and Hannah Huppenbauer with 12.
- Alex Equihua set a career high with 56 assists on the day.
- MaKenna Barnhart and Gillian Santana both recorded 13 digs.
