INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Indianapolis volleyball team closed out day one of the 2021 UIndy Invitational with an exhilarating four-set win over nationally-ranked No. 21 West Florida. The Argonauts entered the match not only undefeated, but hadn't dropped a set all season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy trailed 21-18 in the opening frame before a pair of kills from Grace Hegwood and a third from Elizabeth Eads knotted the score at 21. The Hounds utilized another 3-0 run capped off with a kill from Lauren Cullison to regain a 24-22 lead. An Argonaut service error gave the Hounds a 25-23 win.
The Argonauts recorded the first eight points of the second set en route to a 25-23 win. UIndy fought back to tie it at 19 before West Florida tallied six of the final eight points.
The third set saw a 4-0 run with a pair of kills from Hannah Huppenbauer to give UIndy their first lead early on. Trailing 22-18, a trio of Argonaut attack errors and a kill from Cullison evened the score at 22. The Hounds scored the final three points of the set capped off with a kill from Emma Jones.
Neither team led by more than four points in the final frame. The Hounds fired on all cylinders, posting a 0.441 hitting percentage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- For the second straight game, Cullison led the offense with 16 kills. Jones and Hegwood finished with 12 each while Huppenbauer recorded 10.
- Huppenbauer tabbed seven blocks while Alex Equihua dished out 47 assists.
- The Hounds tallied four aces to West Florida's one.
- The teams tied in both blocks (12) and assists (53).
UP NEXT
UIndy returns to action at 10 am ET on Saturday, taking on Missouri S&T followed by No. 14 Winona State at 6 pm ET. Both games will be played in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
