INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis volleyball team stole the first set against nationally-ranked Lewis University on Tuesday night, but ultimately fell 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. Five Hounds notched double digits kills in their second GLVC loss of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds took control of the first set with a quick 3-0 run to go up 18-12 with a kill from Emma Jones. The Flyers pulled back within two but UIndy scored five of the final six points to take the first set 25-19. Alex Equihua sealed set point with a service ace.
Trailing 17-11 in the second, the Hounds rattled off four straight points to pull within two. The run included a kill from Grace Hegwood and back-to-back kills from Elizabeth Eads. Lewis jumped out to a 23-18 lead before Lauren Cullison halted their momentum with a kill. Emma Jones notched a kill of her own to pull back within three at 23-20, but the Flyers recorded a pair of kills to take the second set and even the match at one a piece.
UIndy hit a match-best .245 in the third set but fell 30-28 in a nail biter. The Hounds utilized a 4-0 to tie the score at 20 before fighting off a pair of set points to force extras. Back-to-back kills from Hegwood and Eads gave the Hounds a 28-27 advantage but the Flyers rallied for three straight points to edge the Hounds 30-28. UIndy fought off a total of five set points in the third set.
Tied at ten in the fourth set, the Flyers scored four quick points to take a 14-10 lead. The Hounds scored four of the next five points to trail by one but an 8-0 run from Lewis put them ahead 23-14. UIndy tallied four kills to pull within 24-18, but a Flyers kill sealed the 25-18 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Eads paced the Hounds with 13 while boasting a .355 hitting percentage.
- Hegwood recorded 12 kills followed by Jones with 10. Hannah Huppenbauer and Cullison each tallied 10.
- Huppenbauer led the defense with five blocks including four solo.
- Equihua dished out 49 assists on the night while MaKenna Barnhart recorded 33 digs.

Tuesday marked the first match of a four-match home stand for the Hounds. UIndy hosts a pair of GLVC matches this weekend facing Lindenwood on Friday and Quincy on Saturday.
