Hounds Pull Away With Week 1 Win at St. X

CHICAGO – The No. 14 UIndy football team (1-0) started its 2021 campaign with a 34-10 road win at Saint Xavier (0-1) Saturday night. The Greyhounds put up 24 unanswered points in the second half behind a 147-yard, three-touchdown performance from senior running back Toriano Clinton.

INS & OUTS
After battling to a 10-10 stalemate at the half, the Hounds found their stride on both sides of the ball. The offense generated four scoring drives in the second half, while the defense held the Cougars off the board for the final 44 minutes of game time.

Clinton was the focal point of the offense, garnering 29 carries on the way to a game-high 147 rushing yards. He delivered the game-tying touchdown late in the second quarter, the go-ahead score in third, and lastly the final TD of the night  to help clinch it.

Second-year freshman Alonzo Derrick scored his first collegiate touchdown, hauling in a one-yard pass from super-senior Bryce Stancombe in the third quarter. Paul Buisman added a pair of field goals, including a clutch 43-yarder – his career long – to get the Greyhounds on the board following a scoreless first quarter.

Defensively, linebacker Kiave' Guerrier led the Hounds with a personal-best 13 total tackles, two TFLs and a forced fumble. His fellow linebackers, Gavin Bane and Benjamin Hunnius, added eight tackles and seven tackles, respectively. Bane was also credited with a forced fumble, while Hunnius garnered his first career interception with a timely red zone pick in the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE BOX
- Buisman's contributions did not end at field goals, as the special teams savant also averaged more than 42 yards per punt, highlighted by a booming 61-yarder and a stellar 51-yard directional kick that led directly to a Cougar turnover after a muff. He also tallied three touchbacks while handling kickoff duties.
- Stancombe finished 14-for-29 passing for 169 yards one touchdown and zero picks. Frank Bentley had a team-high 72 receiving yards, followed by 65 from Tory Ponder in his Greyhound debut.
- DBs Landry Mavungu and Kasyus Kurns each corralled a Cougar fumble, part of four turnovers by the home team.
- Bane and Kyle Borske earned one sack apiece, while Larry Burks and Aaron Barnett split UIndy's third sack. SXU managed zero sacks on the night.
