Two Late Goals Give Greyhounds a Close Win Over Ashland

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In an action-packed match, a pair of late goals by Makel Rasheed and Alejandro Steinwascher helped propel the No. 4 ranked University of Indianapolis men's soccer team past Ashland University on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In just the third minute of action, the Hounds found the scoreboard to take the early advantage. Off a corner kick, Eli Dulle was the first to find the ball and floated a header to the side of the net where Felix Schuetz corralled the rebound with a header of his own past the goalkeeper for his first career goal with UIndy.

Despite the favorable start, Ashland quickly answered the call with the equalizer in the 16th minute to put the match back on an even playing field.

The Greyhounds continued to bring the pressure on offense late into the opening half, which notably saw Jakob David barely missing out on a goal off a free kick from around 30 yards out that went high and drilled the crossbar.

Opportunities continued to fall into the hands of UIndy in the second half, with Steinwascher adding another close miss on a shot from the left side of the net that darted across and sailed off the right post. The Eagles eventually produced the game-leading goal in the 62nd minute.

With time running out, the Hounds managed to tie the match in the 85th minute. Michael Tselios sailed a free kick from around 20 yards out towards the net where Rasheed gathered the ball and kicked one by the keeper.

Moments later in the 87th minute, it was Steinwascher who beat the defense and fired the match-winning goal to send UIndy home with a win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Greyhounds dominated the offensive end of the field, attempting 27 total shots compared to just six from the Eagles.
- Alongside the many opportunities the team had to score, UIndy attempted 14 corner kicks while Ashland had just two in return.
- The Eagles led the foul total with 19 while the Hounds produced just seven.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins views on the match...
"We showed great character to fight back late. I think it's gonna be really good for our group, really good for our team chemistry [and our togetherness] for us to have that experience of being down late and to come back and get a victory."

Coach Higgins on the importance of winning non-conference matches...
"It's really important for us to get those [two wins this weekend in Columbus] because our conference is so big. When you get so few out of conference games you have to make the most of them, so for us to get a win on the road and a win in a neutral site hopefully it favors really well towards the end of the season."

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 12 to open conference play and the home portion of the schedule against Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 2:30 p.m.
