INDIANAPOLIS—As the final day of the House of Champions meet at the IU Natatorium came to a close, Jeron Thompson was able to add his name to the list of record breakers this weekend as he became the new leader in the 100 freestyle.
Thompson's 43.35 was an improvement on his B-cut time and also moved him into second place nationally in the event.
Outside of Thompson, it was another strong day for the No. 1 Greyhounds as they added seven more event wins as well as the team win for both the men and women with 1592 and 1570 points, respectively.
On the men's side, Bartek Swiderski won the 200 back with a time of 1:45.66, improving on his B-cut position as well as vaulting him into the No. 2 spot nationally. Serge Ahadzhanian won the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.75, improving his B cut and moving to third nationally.
Meanwhile for the women, Kaitlyn McCoy was able to pick up the win in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.86. It was an improvement on her B-cut time as well as her nation leading time. Johanna Buys added another individual win on the weekend as she took the 100 free event with a 50.16.. The 400 free relay team of Leticia Vaselli, Caroline Reinke, Julia Magierowska, and Buys continued to improve their provisional time with a winning time of 3:23.48.
On the boards, Julio Osuna completed his sweep of the diving competition after winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 335.10. Cade Hammond was able to take third with a score of 312.85. On the women's 3-meter, Alexis Lumaj finished in the top five with a score of 254.63.
The team will take a break from NCAA competition until their next dual against Denison on Jan. 7, 2023, but multiple Hounds will be heading to Greensboro, S.C., for the U.S. Open Championships starting on Nov. 30 and running through Dec. 3.
FRIDAY
On a day where both the men and women's team became the
top dogs in the nation, the UIndy swimming & diving teams continued their record-breaking ways at the House of Champions meet. On the second day of the annual meet, held at the IU Natatorium in downtown Indy, sophomore
Cedric Buessing highlighted the day with a school record-breaking performance in the 400 IM.
After having a slow start in the prelims, Buessing came out swinging in the finals, setting the new UIndy mark at 3:46.02. His time hit an NCAA A-cut, automatically qualifying the German speedster for the event at nationals while also assuming the fastest time in Division II this year.
Meanwhile, grad-transfer
Serge Ahadzhanian rocketed up the UIndy top-10 list in the 100 fly. His runner-up time Friday evening of 47.81 was good for the third-fastest ever by a Greyhound behind long-time record-holder Manuel Stiem (47.28, 2009) and teammate
Kael Yorke (46.86, 2022). It was also an improvement on his team-leading B cut in the event as well as setting a new national best.
The Greyhound men picked up the gold in the 200 medley relay with a DII-leading time of 1:25.56 and also the 800 free relay with a time of 6:37.87.
On the women's side, the Hounds took the top spot in four events today while setting nationally-ranked times. The 200 medley relay team set the No. 1 time in Division II by clocking in at 1:41.10. Individually,
Johanna Buys added another win on the weekend by swimming a 54.77 in the 100 fly, improving her B-cut while also new No. 1 time in the country.
Kaitlyn McCoy improved her nation-leading 400 IM time to 4:20.79 after having the fastest time in both the prelims and the finals.
Caroline Reinke also jumped in the national rankings in the 100 back and setting a B-cut after winning the event with a 55.29.
The divers were also in action today, with the men on the 3-meter board and the women on the 1-meter. The big story for the Hounds came when
Julio Osuna set a new meet record in the 3-meter with a score of 382.13, beating the previous record of 359.30.
The top-ranked Greyhounds will conclude their weekend at House of Champions with 12 more events and plenty of opportunities to break more records on Saturday. Prelims once again start at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
THURSDAY
The Greyhounds felt the need for speed Thursday evening as
Johanna Buys and
Diego Mas both broke school and meet records in the 50 free on day one of the annual House of Champions meet.
Mas was the first to set a record time as he swam a 19.60 during the morning prelim session. His time surpassed the previous UIndy best of 19.64, set by Victor Antoñon, while shattering the meet record of 19.82. He also hit an A-cut mark, automatically qualifying for nationals by .03 seconds.
Buys was the second to break a record when she led off for the Hounds in the evening finals of the women's 200 freestyle relay. Her time of 22.49 broke her own UIndy benchmark of 22.52, beat the previous meet record of 22.83, while also hitting an A-cut.
Buys was part of another meet record-breaking performance Thursday as she was joined by
Leticia Vaselli,
Julia Magierowska and
Andrea Paaske in setting a new meet record in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.86, beating the previous record by nearly a second.
Elsewhere in the meet, five other swimmers improved their spots on the UIndy all-time leaderboard.
Kaitlyn McCoy improved to second on the school's 500 free top 10 with a time of 4:54.82. Paaske also landed on the 50 free board as her time of 23.41 was good enough for eighth in UIndy history.
On the men's side,
Christian Hedeen improved his PR and B-cut time 500 free with a 4:22.18, while
Cedric Buessing did the same with a time of 4:22.37.
Joao Silva also improved his PR in the 50 free to 19.85.
