WESTFIELD, Ind. – On a cold evening in Westfield,
Xavier Rivas notched his UIndy career-high of 11 strikeouts through eight complete innings of work at Grand Park to help lift the University of Indianapolis baseball team past Notre Dame (OH) 5-0 on opening day.
Rivas tossed a total of 114 pitches and allowed just three hits while walking only one batter.
Austin Bestul finished the game off in the ninth by striking out the three batters he faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds grabbed the lead early in the first when
Caleb Vaughn scored from third on a failed pickoff attempt. The lead extended to two runs in the fourth when
Denton Shepler crossed the plate on another throwing error by NDC.
The final winning push in the eighth was the difference maker for UIndy, who brought in three runs in the inning.
Brandon DeWitt and Shepler each helped roll home a run on a pair of successful sacrifice bunts. DeWitt would end up scoring in the inning off a dropped fly ball in the outfield.
