Baseball Secures Series Sweep with Doubleheader Wins on Sunday

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis baseball team won both games of the doubleheader this afternoon against Notre Dame (OH) at Grand Park. With this, the Hounds begin the year at a perfect 3-0 and lock up a series sweep over the Falcons.

GAME 1 | UIndy 15, NDC 14
Denton Shepler produced a walk-off base hit in the ninth inning to help the Greyhounds weather a comeback effort from the Falcons.

UIndy jumped out ahead early, leading 7-1 though just two innings of action. The lead blossomed to 10-3 through three before the Falcons rattled off six unanswered runs which included a grand slam to cut the Greyhound lead to just one. Not to be denied, the Hounds rolled out four more runs through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. However, NDC made one last push and successfully tied things in the top half of the ninth with a three-run showing.

With the game on the line, Shepler stepped in to pinch hit for UIndy and successfully slipped a single past the infield which scored the winning run from third base.

In total, the Greyhounds blasted 18 total hits while Notre Dame trailed close behind with 16. Kase Lawson earned the start from the bump, going six complete innings of work where he recorded a total of eight strikeouts. Jakob Hughes came in for relief and tossed two complete before Wyatt Phillips finished the game in the ninth and earned the win in the process.

GAME 2 | UIndy 13, NDC 3

Game two saw the score at a 1-1 stalemate through the top half of the third before the Hounds opened the floodgates and overwhelmed the Falcons. In just three innings of offense, UIndy rattled off 10 unanswered runs before NDC could respond back with two in the seventh. Even then, the Greyhounds brought two more across the plate in the bottom half of the seventh to help eventually secure the 10-run win.
