Rivas Sits Down Double-Digit Batters Again, Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. –Star lefty pitcher Xavier Rivas continued his early season dominance from the bump by sitting down 11 batters against the Lewis Flyers in game one of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon to headline play for the University of Indianapolis baseball team. The Hounds were victorious 8-1 in game one while dropping game two by a close decision of 6-5.

Rivas, who threw 117 pitches and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning of the seven inning contest, has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in all five starts he has made so far while also jumping his season strikeout total to 61 through just 36 complete innings pitched.

GAME 1 | UIndy 8, LU 1 (7 innings)
Rivas wasn't the only Greyhound to tally a strong performance on the diamond in game one, as freshman Armen Torosian continued the hot start to his first year with the Hounds after going 3-for-4 from the plate which included four RBIs, two runs scores, a two-run home run, and a final slugging percentage of 2.000.

In his first game back into the lineup, Alex Vela delivered the first runs of the game in the top half of the opening inning on a two-run home run to left center field. Torosian brought around another run for the Hounds on an RBI double, making the score 3-0 in favor of UIndy after the opening frame.

In the third, Torosian picked up right where he left off with another RBI double while Will Spear shortly after joined in with an RBI single of his own to center field to make it a 6-0 ballgame. Finally, Torosian capped off game one with his two-run homer in the seventh to help UIndy secure the easy victory.

GAME 2 | LU 6, UIndy 5 (7 innings)
The Hounds wasted no time in game two as leadoff batter Caleb Vaughn crushed a solo homer to center field to get the scoring started. However, the Flyers battled back and brought in a pair of runs in the bottom half to take the lead.

UIndy tied the game in the fourth when Nathan Fish hit into a successful sacrifice fly. Despite Lewis regaining the lead in the bottom half, the Hounds battled tough into the fifth when Vaughn tallied another RBI off a single through the left side. Despite this, the Flyers once again produced a run in the bottom half to take the lead back. However, it was Fish in the sixth who belted a solo homer to tie the game at five apiece. Lewis eventually won the game in the bottom of the seventh off a walk-off base hit.

Vaughn tallied a team-high two hits and three RBIs from the plate. Logan Peterson earned the start from the bump and went three complete where he managed four strikeouts on three walks and two hits given up. Johnny Irish was tabbed as the losing pitcher.
