Comeback Falls Short as Baseball Drops Close Game in Extras to #8 UIS

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis baseball team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell by a final of 11-10 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon against No. 8 Illinois Springfield. With the loss, UIndy falls to 20-25 overall on the season with a 11-9 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Illinois Springfield opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning. However, in the next half inning, Jared Bujdos took ahold of a ball and sent it deep over the left field fence for a two-run homer to cut into the deficit.

UIS added a lone run in the fifth to extend its lead before the Hounds answered with four runs in the sixth to tie the game. The scoring for UIndy began when Will Spear executed a bunt with the bases loaded that scored the runner on third. Then, Brandon DeWitt stepped up and produced a clutch RBI single up the middle that scored one. On the next at-bat, Alex Vela was hit by a pitch which scored another. Finally, Drew Donaldson tallied a walk with the bases still loaded to score the final run of the eventful inning.

The Prairie Stars tallied two more runs in the seventh before the Greyhounds crossed four in the bottom half to take the lead. UIndy scored two on a pair of errors while a Shepler RBI single brought in the others. However, UIS tied the game with a pair crossing in the eighth. The damage was further limited in the ninth when Johnny Irish stepped up big on the mound for the Hounds and got out of a bases loaded jam which ended in no runs for the Prairie Stars.

Despite the late game heroics from UIndy, Illinois Springfield grabbed the lead in the 10th and held on to win the game.
