ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Xavier Rivas of the University of Indianapolis baseball team has been named as the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year, officials announced on Wednesday. He was also tabbed as a First Team honoree on the release for his stellar season this spring.
Â
Rivas, who was also named as the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Pitcher of the Year and a First Team all-conference selection, produced one of the best statistical seasons for a UIndy pitcher in school history. Most notably, he tallied 128 strikeouts in 80-1/3 innings pitched with an earned run average (ERA) of just 2.24. His strikeout total this season landed him second all-time on the UIndy baseball single season strikeout leaderboard, trailing only behind Greyhound legend Bill Bright.
Â
The star left-handed pitcher dealt at a high level all season, finishing the year with a 14.34 strikeouts per nine innings average which ranked towards the top in the NCAA Division II. Rivas managed double-digit Ks in 10 of his 12 appearances this year which at one point included an eight game streak of sitting down 10 or more batters in a game. His final WHIP sat at 0.98, which was the lowest by a Greyhound hurler that has tossed 10 or more innings in a season since 2016 (does not include shortened 2020 season). Â
