Hounds Shut Out Yellow Jackets for First Win

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The UIndy women's soccer team claimed their first victory of the season in a 1-0 match on the home turf of the Cedarville Yellow Jackets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Action in the first half was quiet. The Yellow Jackets opened the contest by peppering the Greyhounds with shots, with the first four coming by the hosts. The Hounds put their only attempt on frame of the first half off of the foot of Elisabeth Kessler, missing to the left of the goal.

The second half was when the Hounds picked up the pace, pushing on the attack. Then in the 58th minute, a free kick from 30 yards out by Maria Herrero landed perfectly in front of the box allowing for Sarah Wegener to net the contest's lone goal of the match.

From that point on, the defensive prowess of the Hounds was on full display, as they stifled any opportunity for the Yellow Jackets. From that point forward, both teams each managed two more shots in the contest, but the Greyhounds held on to win under the night sky of Cedarville.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Wegener's goal marked the first of her collegiate career.
- The Yellow Jackets held the advantage in shot, 9-6, as both teams managed two attempts on frame.
- The Yellow Jackets committed 11 fouls to UIndy's eight.
- Cedarville had seven corners to the Hounds' three.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach Holly Cox on the back lines performance…
"I felt we were a little bit more organized defensively, I felt the back line made adjustments from the first half and had a better performance in the second half."

Cox on Sarah Wegener's play…
"I think what really helped the back line out was a good performance from the midfield and front, in particular, Sarah [Wegener], played really well as a holding mid. She was actually able to break down a lot of Cedarville's attack today. She was class in front of the back four."

Cox on Uma Yadav's stellar defensive game…
"Uma, sometimes she can be a little bit overly aggressive, and step a little too high but she played the best of both worlds today, she stepped when she needed to and was calm and composed when she needed to."

Cox on the value of the tough non-conference matches…
"It was just a really hard-fought match. Cedarville are a really good side. We always see them in post season, so every time we come to them, or they come to us, it's always a battle, and it sets us up well for conference play, because this is the level of intensity, grit and grind that we're going to have to see, week in and week out, from our players in order to have a successful season.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds conclude non-conference play at in-region Ashland this coming Sunday for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
