INDIANAPOLIS – Among a downpour of rain, the UIndy women's soccer team forced a 0-0 draw this Sunday afternoon. The tie moved them to 1-2-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a gritty first half of action between the Greyhounds and the Saints. For the first ten minutes of action, it was back and forth with the ball staying in the midfield. The teams fought for ground as the rain poured in the circle city, and with the rain came fouls aplenty, each team recording four in the first half.
The first shot of the match came by the way of the Hounds at the 16th minute, a booming shot from thirty yards out by
Sarah Wegener, falling right in the arms of the Maryville goalie. The Saints answered back with five unanswered shots of their own, three of which being on goal, all saved by
Makenna Nickens.
Seven minutes in the second half
Uma Yadav took a shot, missing to the left, that was followed just a minute later by
Alexi Hardie attempt at the 54th minute. The Hounds put on the pressure from there, living in the Saints side of the pitch. The Saints kept the Greyhounds off the board and went on the counter with a shot in the 71st.
Sukhmani Shergill recorded her first shot on goal of the season with a hard-hit ball at the center of the net, saved by the goalkeeper of the Saints. Both the Hounds and Saints traded shots to end the contest, the score reading 0-0 as the buzzer sounded.

HOUND BYTES
Holly Cox on her team's performance in the rough conditions…
"Good result, obviously you want the win. The elements played a part in the game, when you're playing in the rain things can happen, things happen by chance, things happen by people making mistakes and I actually felt like we dealt with the conditions really well today, Maryville good side, we knew it was going to be a physical battle, we said before the game, it's going to be about who plays more minutes in the other team, and I actually felt like we battled very evenly today."
Cox on the top performers of the match…
"I thought
Ella DeSmet worked extremely hard up top she followed through with our game plan, worked hard, got pressure to their center backs. I thought
Ava Kettler worked extremely hard, defended really well, battles always got stuck in. Nickens in goal, kept a clean sheet, she got tested a couple of times, had safe hands, came up big with her distribution, commanded the back line really well."
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds stay a Key Stadium next game as they host the Bearcats of McKendree, with the action kicking off at noon.
