Novikova, Sharonova Win ITA Midwest Doubles Championship

Box Score

ALLENDALE, Mich. – UIndy women's tennis has claimed back-to-back Midwest doubles crowns. Last year it was the duo of Anna Novikova and Isabella Dunlap, and this year it is the combo of Novikova and Sofia Sharonova that are champions. The pair dominated in the semi-finals Monday, with an 8-3 win and in the best of three finals kept that fire going. Set one was a 6-1 win and from that point the Greyhounds didn't drop a single game, concluding their championship winning performance with a 6-0 second set.

Singles saw a finals appearance by Lea Cakarevic, who after a spectacular run winning on the semi's 6-1, 7-5, fell in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Novikova would lose as well in the final day of competition as she dropped her semifinal match 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.

The win by Novikova and Sharonova will send them to the ITA Cup alongside men's doubles champions Tom Zeuch and Edgar Destouet on Oct. 12-16.

DAY 2
The No. 1 seed Anna Novikova and the No. 3 Lea Cakarevic have been dominant so far in the ITAs singles bracket.

Novi left the sweet sixteen with a three-set victory, winning the first set 6-3. Her Illinois Springfield opponent fought off the sweep taking the second set in a tiebreaker, but it was Novikova who once again dominated in set three like she had the day before. Her second singles match of the day, in the quarterfinals, was smoother, winning in duplicate 7-5 sets, setting her place in the semifinals Monday morning.

Cakarevic was impeccable on day two, keeping her theme of no third sets. Her third-round matchup she made quick work of, winning 6-2. 6-1. Not happy with having lost three games, she lost only one in her quarterfinals matchup, winning 6-0, 6-1, only one game away from a perfect sweep. She now awaits Sienna Lopez from Purdue Northwest.

Doubles saw Sofia Sharonova and Novikova continue their pursuit of a Greyhound repeat crown as they won their match 8-5.

Both Maissane Aik and Sharonova had rough days in singles, with each falling in the round of the sixteen. Aik lost in a 6-3, 6-3 match, while Sharonova lost 6-4, 7-6, 10-6.

DAY 1
Day one was successful in singles for the small group of Greyhounds up north at the ITA DII Midwest Regional.

Anna Novikova, the No. 1 seed, dominated in the first round, winning 6-4, 7-6. She was caught off guard in the first set of her second-round match, falling 6-3. She held on however, with a 6-3 win and then a crushing 10-3 final set win.

The young No. 3 seed, Lea Cakarevic, showed why she is not a player to be trifled with, losing only four games across the round of 64 and 32 on day one. Her first win was 6-3, 6-0 and her second was 6-1, 6-0.

Out of Geneva, Switzerland, Maissane Aik, as the No. 4 seed, waltzed through day one without a set loss as well, winning her matches 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-3.

Sofia Sharonova made quick work in her first set of day one, winning 6-0. She was pushed in set two but prevailed 7-6. Her second round match was a walk in the park as she won 6-4, 6-2.
