INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team defeated Purdue Northwest, 71-59, in their home opener on Tuesday. Elana Wells dropped 23 points on 7-for-16 shooting. The junior was also 8-of-9 on free throws, and added four rebounds and three assists.

The Greyhounds started the game off with a 10-5 run in the first 6:40, five players had two points. Jada Patton had a buzzer-beater from the field ending the quarter with a 19-11 lead.

The Hounds scored 21 points in the second quarter. The squad went on a 10-2 run for 1:55, this run included back-to-back 3-pointers by Liv Becker. With 30 seconds left in the hal,f Wells stole the ball at mid-court and drove through the lane for a layup.

Purdue Northwest got the UIndy lead down to single digits, but the Greyhound defense held the Pride to just 25 percent shooting in the final 10 minutes to secure the win. Defensively, the Hounds recorded nine steals and five blocks in the contest.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
-  For the second time this season UIndy attempted 72 shots in a game. During the entire 2022-23 season, the Greyhounds shot the ball 70+ times just once.
- The Hounds had a season-high 54 rebounds, with another season-best 19 offensive boards.
- Idalis Ortiz recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
- UIndy led wire-to-wire, holding the lead for more than 39 minutes.
 
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will travel to Upper Iowa on Saturday. This will be the first time that the teams will compete against each other. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST in Fayette, Iowa in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
