ALLENDALE, Mich.—The UIndy men's golf team opened its 2023-24 slate at the prestigious Folds of Honor Challenge Sunday and Monday. The Greyhounds posted the lowest team score of the tournament in round two, but the skies opened up Monday morning to wash out the third and final round and keep the Hounds in 10th place after 36 holes.
 
The 15-team, 90-man event was held at par-71 Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
 
INS & OUTS
With a green lineup that featured four freshmen and a sophomore, the Hounds had a rocky start, combining for a 33-over 317 in the first round.
 
"I think it was a lot of nerves and a little bit of anxiety to start their careers off as a young team," noted Head Coach Brent Nicoson about the team's opening round. "We had five freshmen and a sophomore out there on a really tough golf course against a lot of good teams."
 
But the young Hounds flipped the script in round two, firing an amazing six-under 278 to vault up the leaderboard. Three Greyhounds—Simon Engman (-5), Maverick Conaway (-3) and Drew Rowen (-2)—posted scores in the 60s to lead the charge.
 
"What I'm most proud of was the bounce-back," Nicoson added. "They came back and had a round of 278 for the day's lowest round; had it to 10-under at one time. Maverick, Drew and Simon were awesome in that second round, so I think it was a great start.
 
"They were anxious the play today; they were kind of sad it got rained out because they had a good feeling moving forward. But to shoot 278 in the second round—four freshmen and a sophomore in that top five—I was proud of them."
 
Engman carded scores of 78-66 to lead the way, finishing at +2 to share eighth place. Grand Valley's Drew Coble (-5) took medalist honors, while his Lakers captured the team title and a spot in the 2024 Folds of Honor Collegiate.
