UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.—In its first road game of the season, the 16th-ranked UIndy football team put on an impressive display at Saginaw Valley Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds dominated the host Cardinals in a 35-10 final, racking up five touchdowns offensively and four sacks on defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds got on the board first and never looked back. After a sack (and near-safety) by
Justin Thomas, the Greyhounds earned a short field and quickly punched it in with a rushing TD by
Jon Lewis.
Â
Meanwhile, the Cardinal offense struggled to move the ball. The home team managed a 35-yard field goal early in the second quarter and did not score again until the final minute of the game, long after it was out of reach.
Â
Junior receiver
Alonzo Derrick continued his big-play tendencies, scoring from 66 yards in the second quarter and later from 70 yards in the third. He now has four touchdowns on the season, all from at least 20 yards out.
Â
Â
The UIndy defense made a slew of big plays as well. The Hounds were consistently in the Saginaw backfield, compiling four sacks, seven total tackles for a loss and six QB hurries. Thomas had a pair of sacks, while
Aaron Barnett and
Dylan Shelton added one apiece. Cornerback
Landry Mavungu, meanwhile, had the Cardinals on lockdown, earning an athletic interception in the third quarter as well as two pass break-ups.
Â
