KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The No. 3 UIndy softball team added two more conference wins under their belt after sweeping Truman on Sunday. The Greyhounds faced a tough opponent in the Bulldogs, having to come back from deficits to win both games. UIndy's win streak now stands at 15.
GAME 1 | UIndy 2, Truman 1
After being down 1-0 to the Bulldogs, the Greyhounds took the lead in the fifth. A double from
Emily O'Connor allowed the runner on second to advance home. Truman chose to load the bases with an intentional walk to
Lexy Rees, but the decision backfired after
Braxton Downs coerced a walk to give UIndy the lead.
Pitching ace
Kenzee Smith grabbed her 25th win this season. Smith finished with 14 strikeouts, her highest total this year. This was the first time since March 17 that the senior allowed an earned run, a span of 75 consecutive innings.
UIndy's top three hitters
– Jocelyn Calvin,
Megan Nichols and O'Connor
– combined for seven hits. Rees stole two bases during game one, while Shelby cook added a sac bunt.
GAME 2 | UIndy 11, Truman 7
The Hounds again faced a deficit in game two, this time trailing by four runs after three innings. UIndy responded with three tallies in the fourth and two more in the fifth to eventually tie the score at 7-7 heading into the top of the sixth.
UIndy started another push with a leadoff, go-ahead homer by O'Connor. The New Palestine, Ind., native, who already broke the school record for
most career home runs, tied the program's single-season mark with the clutch dinger. The record was first set by Megan Russell, who hit 17 during the 2009 season.
Later in the inning, Cook sent the ball into left field for a double and an RBI. With a runner on third,
Tori Angles capped the rally with an RBI infield hit, giving the Greyhounds a 10-7 lead .
Rees hit a bomb of her own with a two-run blast in the third inning. Along with Rees, Calvin and O'Connor finished with two ribbies. Cook also had a stolen base.
Smith earned her second win of the day after coming in during the fifth inning. The senior only surrendered just one hit during the 2 2/3 innings she pitched, allowing UIndy to take the lead in the process.
Jayden Casebolt and
Kaitlyn Brown both entered the circle during the contest, with Casebolt starting game two.
