INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy wrestling team opens its season this weekend at the Glenville State Invitational in Glenville, W. Va, hosted by Glenville State. UIndy was picked to
finish third in the GLVC preseason poll. The team will look to better it's
fourth place finish at last year's GLVC Championships, where the Greyhounds finished fourth behind the likes of; Maryville, McKendree and Upper Iowa. All three of those teams are also projected in the top four of this year's 2025 GLVC Preseason poll.
UIndy returns two members of last year's
Southside Six squad that made its way to the NCAA DII Championships,
Nathan Smith (125) and
Cale Gray (285). Both of them rank in the top five of their respective weight classes in this season's
NWCA Preseason Poll, with Gray at fifth in 285 and Smith at eighth in 125.
Along with last season's two national qualifiers, the Greyhounds also return two other NCAA Regional qualifiers in
Jadon Gyan (133) and
Shane Bates (165), with two more returnees
Gavin Garcia (141), and
Logan Farnell (174), slatted to see more action this season.
The Hounds have also added some key pieces to their team this year with freshman
Ethan Farnell,
Mason Day and
Michael Ortega, all looking to make an instant impact on the 2025-26 Greyhound squad.
"We are really excited about our new guys. This was not only a large recruiting class for us but also a very talented group," head coach
Jason Warthan said. "We will be using the first half of the year to figure out our best lineup for second semester when we compete in mostly duals."
Warthan is entering his 16th season with the UIndy Wrestling program, sporting a career 138-115 record in duals. His 138 wins are second all time in program history behind Terry Wetherald who led the Greyhounds to 230 career dual victories in his 30 plus seasons at the helm.
