NEW PALESTINE, IN – The No. 5 UIndy baseball team wrapped up their weekend series against Grand Valley State on Sunday, dropping both games of their doubleheader.
Both games were moved to New Palestine High School in New Palestine, IN today due to unplayable field conditions at Greyhound Park.
GAME 3 | UIndy 6, Grand Valley State 13
In Sunday's first game, the Lakers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after three innings. Both Austin Bode and Chase Mason knocked in the Hounds' two first runs of the game in the first and third innings.
Ryan Dykstra and Jovan Gill led the way for the Lakers, combining for eight of Grand Valley's 13 runs on the day.
The Hounds brought in four relief pitchers today; Dylan Kaminski, Will Melby, Max Shelburn and Andrew Dewitt, who pitched the remaining three frames, and combined for four punch outs and four hits on four runs.
Mason and Armen Torosian were the only two Greyhounds who recorded a multi-hit game in game one. Torosian went 3-3 with one RBI, and Mason went 2-4 with an RBI as well.
Torosian cut into the Lakers lead in the seventh inning with an RBI double to left center, but that run was not enough as Colton King came in to close the game out for Grand Valley with a ground out and fly out to secure the 13-6 win for Grand Valley.
GAME 4 | UIndy 2, Grand Valley State 6
In his first career start for UIndy, the sophomore lefty Bennett Rogers tossed 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. His only other appearance this season came against Hillsdale in relief when he pitched 4.1 innings and recorded five punch outs.
Both pitchers kept the offenses at bay early, with the Lakers having a 2-1 lead after four. Joey Humphrey brought in the first run for UIndy in the second inning on a line drive hit to Sebastian Tolaga that he was unable to coral, allowing Dom Brown to score. After Humphrey's single in the second, the Hounds only notched one hit the rest of the afternoon. Grand Valley's Tolaga and Ty Randall pitched a combined two hit eight innings after starter Ethan Houghtaling left after one inning due to injury.
The Hounds second run came in the fifth frame when Luke Smock's sac fly to left field scored Humphrey to bring the score to 3-2 Grand Valley.
UIndy recorded two total base runners in the final four frames, and were unable to keep the Lakers off the board, as Grand Valley picked up three more runs on two singles in the seventh and ninth innings to wrap up the weekend series for Grand Valley with a 6-2 victory.
