Softball Earns Run-Rule Wins in Saturday Sweep

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 17 UIndy softball team exploded for 28 runs in a sweep of visiting Quincy University Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds blanked the Hawks, 12-0, in game one before handing them a 16-4 loss in game two—both in five innings. The Hounds hit a combined .455 on the day, including 10 doubles and three home runs.

The games were contested at local Beech Grove High School on the southside of Indianapolis.

GAME 1 | UIndy 12, Quincy 0 (5 innings)
Less than 24 hours removed from hitting a walkoff single yesterday, freshman Brooklyn Willis had another big day at the plate. She got the scoring started on Saturday with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, setting the offensive tone for the day.

The Hounds enjoyed a 4-0 lead through three innings before putting the Hawks away with a decisive eight-run fourth inning. Cara Cooper and Cheyenne Eads each had a two-RBI double, while Maya Rodriguez blasted a two-run homer.

Eads (4-4) and Isabelle Noble combined for the shutout in the circle. Starter Eads allowed just two hits and a walk in in four scoreless frames, while Noble retired the Hawks in the fifth without incident.

Freshman Abbey Brown earned her first collegiate hit with a pinch-hit double in the fourth, while Kaitlyn Flynn added a sac fly.

GAME 2 | UIndy 16, Quincy 4 (5 innings)
The offensive onslaught continued in game two. The Greyhounds plated four runs in both the first and second innings, sending the Hawks reeling from the start. Willis was at the center of the early rallies, roping a two-run double in the first and an opposite-field three-run homer in the second. She finished the game with six RBIs, part of eight ribbies on the afternoon.

UIndy finished its scoring with its second eight-run rally of the day, hanging a snowman on the board in the fourth. Both Josie Jager and Peyton Cusack came off the bench to deliver RBI doubles to highlight the action.

Starting pitcher Jayden Casebolt—who also had two walks and two runs at the plate—moved to 7-1 after picking up the win. She surrendered just two hits and K'd six in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Hailey Thompson came in to record the final two outs in her first appearance of the weekend.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will hop on a plane for their annual Spring Break trek to Florida next week. The six-game trip kicks off with an in-region meeting with Hillsdale College on Monday, March 10 at 9 a.m. ET.
