Hounds Bested in First Two Games Against Lewis

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy baseball team dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader against Lewis, who currently sits atop the GLVC standings.

The Hounds struggled at the plate today, but Nick Lukac and Cole Hampton were both bright spots in the lineup for the Hounds. Lukac recorded three hits over both games, while Hampton hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season in game two.

Lewis ranks in the top 10 nationally in both batting average and home runs, and they showcased that today with 36 hits and six home runs, while also tallying 24 runs.

GAME 1 | UIndy 1, Lewis 8
The Greyhounds found themselves in an early hole, falling behind 2-0 after two innings on back-to-back RBI doubles from Lewis' Cole Nelson and Tyler Phommacha, before they tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 4-0 Lewis. 10 of the 11 batters for the Flyers today recorded a hit.

UIndy didn't find much success at the plate today, going 6-32 as a team, but Nick Lukac did provide a little bit of life into the Hounds' offense in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that brought home Easton Good from second base and scored UIndy's lone run of the game.

Diego Cardenas started this one for UIndy and had himself a strong outing, pitching his seventh quality start of the season after going 6.1 innings pitched. Cardenas also notched seven strikeouts, which is the sixth start in which he's thrown at least seven strikeouts. Brian Robertson, Payton Plym, Steven Jones and Will Melby finished the game in relief of Cardenas.

Lewis used four runs in the eighth and ninth innings that included; three RBI singles and a solo home run down the left field line to double the Flyers' lead and close out the 8-1 game one win over the Hounds.

GAME 2 | UIndy 4, Lewis 16
The second game of Friday's doubleheader was all Lewis, as the Flyers jumped all over the Hounds early, tacking on 11 runs in the first four innings thanks to three singles and four home runs.

Jacob Flaherty had a strong outing today in relief of Bennett Rogers, pitching 3.1 innings giving up four hits, four runs and striking out one Flyer. Those 3.1 innings marked Flaherty's longest career outing since he pitched three innings last season against Lewis (5/4/24). Along with Flaherty, Max Shelburn and Ryan O'Born also made appearances today in game two for UIndy.

The Hounds had a strong bottom of the fifth inning with an Austin Bode RBI, a two run home run to right center field for Hampton and a two run RBI single for Good. The Hounds recorded six of their seven hits from game two in the fifth inning. Lewis capped off the day with five more runs in the sixth and seventh frames to wrap up game two, 16-4.
