INDIANAPOLIS – Heading into the team's second dual of 2026, the Greyhounds have four wrestlers ranked in the Top-20 of their respective weight classes in this week's edition of The Open Mat rankings.
Nathan Smith (125), who is the first of four Hounds in the rankings, finds himself at No. 15 this week, after a strong performance at the team's dual against Drury last Wednesday. After falling behind 3-2 in his dual with Drury's Bryson Humphries, when Smith turned Humphries' take down into a successive take down of his own, and eventually pinning Humphries to earn the win.
The next Greyhound to find his way into the Top 20 is Aidan Sprague (133), who sports a No. 14 ranking this week. After his stellar performance at this years' Midwest Classic, Sprague has been a mainstay in the rankings, and continues to keep his Top 15 ranking after another win last week via an 8-3 decision.
Shane Bates (165) notched his way into the rankings with the last spot in the rankings, No. 20. Bates cruised to a victory in his last time on the mats after an early take down of Drury's Jeremiah Halter to propel himself to an 11-3 decision victory.
The final ranked Greyhound is Cale Gray (285) who after a loss in his last time out in the team's dual against Drury, still finds himself at No. 11. Even with a dropped result last Wednesday, Gray has proved to be a worthy contender in the heavy weight division with placement finishes at the Findlay Open and Midwest Classic.
UIndy heads to Ohio tomorrow, Friday Jan. 16, for a non-conference dual against in-region opponent, Findlay. This is the team's final standalone non-conference dual this season until the Greyhound Duals on Saturday Feb. 7.
