Greyhounds Fall to Illinois Springfield on Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS — The UIndy women's basketball fell to Illinois Springfield, 75-57, at Nicoson Hall on Saturday. 

Patricia Chikamba scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting while also grabbing five boards and dishing out four assists in Saturday's contest. Amyrah Sapenter added another nine points, and Graycie Poe and Jaelynne Murray added another 12 points combined between the two of them.

Graycie Poe opened the scoring early with a layup, assisted by Kylah Lawson, to set the tone. The Greyhounds then capitalized on fast breaks with layups by Patricia Chikamba and Autumn Rucker, building a 6-0 lead. The Prairie Stars responded with a layup from Libby Blythe, sparking a comeback. Makenna Yeager and Julia Mingus contributed to tie the score 8-8 midway through the first quarter. In the final minutes of the first, both teams traded baskets, with Rucker's layup at 16 seconds tying the game at 14-14 to end the quarter.

The second quarter saw Illinois Springfield extend its lead over the Greyhounds with a strong 24-point performance. Molly Knight contributed significantly with a three-pointer at 3:21 pushing the visitors ahead 26-18. Blythe added to the scoring with a three-pointer at 1:44, increasing the lead to 34-22. UIndy kept pace with contributions from Poe and Lawson late in the second quarter, however Illinois Springfield's Yeager closed the quarter with a layup at the buzzer securing a 38-27 advantage for the visitors at the break.

In the third quarter, Illinois Springfield extended its lead over the Greyhounds with a strong shooting performance, going 10-for-14 from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Kennedy Osterman contributed significantly with her accuracy from long range, scoring multiple times, while Mingus and Allysia McDaniel added to UIS's advantage. Despite a fast break layup by Chikamba and a three-pointer from Jaelynne Murray, the Greyhounds were unable to close the gap, ending the quarter trailing 64-42.

Illinois Springfield's strong start in the fourth quarter maintained its momentum as Blythe scored an early jumper at 9:43, boosting the visitor's lead. Indianapolis's Chikamba responded by scoring two free throws and added two successive layups, cutting the deficit. Despite turnovers from both teams, the Greyhounds managed a brief rally with Murray hitting a three-pointer at 5:44. However, UIS extended its lead with a three-pointer by Allison Wheeler at 2:33. The game concluded with Indianapolis's Ruby Garner and Jenna Guse adding free throws to narrow the gap, but UIS secured a 75-57 victory.

UIndy will have a mini bye week before returning to Nicoson Hall next Saturday Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. for the Hounds' first of two home games to conclude its 2026 regular season against Lewis.
