INDIANAPOLIS— The University of Indianapolis men's lacrosse team fell for the first time this season to No. 12 Newberry in an 8-6 battle at Key Stadium on Friday.
Matt Pereira led the Hounds' offense with a hat trick against the Wolves, while Alec Score was active on the defensive end, causing 8 turnovers and scooping up a new career high 10 ground balls.
INS & OUTS
Pereira opened the scoring, netting his first goal of the day following Score's first caused turnover of the match. Sophomore TJ Reddington won the faceoff and collected the ground ball, giving the Hound possession immediately after their first goal. Nick Luitwiler was able to make his way to find the net for UIndy's second goal in just 30 seconds.
Hahm netted the third goal for the Greyhounds off an assist by Lachlan Korn to give their squad a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the first period. The wolves were able to respond with their first goal of the day, courtesy of Ian Jackson, just 20 seconds later.
Amadeo Miller was able to find Pereira for his second goal of the match, to give Indianapolis a 4-1 lead.The scoring paused for nearly six minutes of gameplay until Newberry was able to find the back of the net for their second goal of the game to close out the first quarter.
The Wolves went on a three-goal run through the second period and were able to take a 5-4 lead over the Hounds with just under four minutes remaining in the half. Rockley was able to find UIndy's first goal of the second quarter to even the scoring at five. Newberry was able to find another goal, giving them the 6-5 advantage leading into the second half.
Pereira scored the lone goal of the third period, off an assist from Dalton Yates, to even the score again at 6-6.
The Wolves recorded two goals in the final quarter to pull away from the Greyhounds, and despite several close calls, the Hounds could not combat the two-goal lead.
INSIDE THE BOX
-Preachuk recorded 10 saves for a .556 save percentage.
-Jonah Koehler was 9-for-13 from the dot, winning half of all the games' total faceoffs.
-The Hounds collected five more caused turnovers than the Wolves.
