INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy men's soccer team won their home opener 1-0 against the Lake Erie Storm.
The game began with early pressure from the Storm as they found two corners within the first five minutes of action before the pace of play slowed. The Greyhounds then took more control of possession and goal scoring opportunities as they found two corner kicks before Truls Karlsen fired the first shot on goal of the game in the 25th minute.
The teams then traded possession again with each backline tested by wide runs until Alejandro Zuniga swung in another Greyhound shot on goal which was stopped by the Storm as the final attempt on goal of the first half.
The second half kicked off to a similar start as the first half with Lake Erie finding a corner kick just minutes in, but remaining even at zero with the Hounds. The patient approach continued for the Greyhounds as they continued to hunt for methodical builds down field until they found their best opportunity of the game.
In the 65th minute a UIndy corner was secured thanks to a run down the right wing by Shayne Abrams. Carson Nolan then took the corner, whipping the ball in off of his left foot before it glanced off the head of Saul Greenwood who knocked in the first goal of the season and of his career.
After the goal the Storm immediately flew down the field looking to challenge the UIndy backline with a shot that Rick Lammerts stopped.
Following the save, the visitors continued to ring shots towards Lammerts. The Greyhound defense had to earn their second clean sheet of the season with Lammerts picking up five more saves in the final 25 minutes and his teammates clearing the ball from their half tens of times.
Lammerts finished with six saves as the rest of the team controlled possession and converted on one of their four shots of the game to secure the win.
The Hounds return to action Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. when they head back on the road to take on the University of Findlay in their final game of non-conference play.
