Volleyball goes 0-2 in day one of Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS- The 24th-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team had a tough first day at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament Friday. UIndy lost to nationally-ranked Grand Valley State in the opener (25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21), before being swept by Northern Michigan (25-23, 25-23, 25-22). The 25-team event is being held at the Team Indiana Volleyball Club in Indianapolis and will conclude Saturday.
 
Match 1
The 6th-ranked Lakers (19-2) controlled the opening set to take a 1-0 lead. UIndy responded with a convincing win in set number two.
 
Despite a solid .343 team hitting percentage in the third frame, the Greyhounds (20-7) narrowly lost set three 25-23. Indianapolis earned a 20-17 lead but couldn't hold it as the Lakers closed on an 8-3 run.
 
The final set featured a match-high 11 ties but GVSU won the race to 25 and took the win. Sophomore Cheneta Morrison had team-highs with 13 kills and .370 hitting percentage while adding eight digs and four blocks. Senior Beth Robbins totaled 44 assists and 12 digs while freshman Courtney Anglemyer added 11 kills and three blocks.
 
Match 2
The Wildcats (15-7) orchestrated a quick 3-0 win in the capper. NMU benefited from 23 UIndy attack errors to out-hit the Hounds by 100 points.
 
Anglemyer paced the Greyhounds with 15 kills, sophomore Lyndsay Callahan hit .345 with 12 kills and 13 blocks, while senior Ashley Fallos scooped a match-high 14 digs.
 
Play continues tomorrow at Team Indiana as UIndy's lone match comes at 10 am versus Northwood.
 
Note: UIndy has lost three straight matches for the first time since October of 2006.
