INDIANAPOLIS- The 24th-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team used a season-high 100 digs to hold off a persistent Northwood squad at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament Saturday. The four-set win (23-25, 25-12, 28-26, 31-29) ensured a 1-2 record for the Greyhounds at the 25-team, two-day event held at Team Indiana Volleyball Club in Indianapolis.
Though the first set was close, UIndy never had the lead. The last of the frame's eight ties came at 22 all, from which point Northwood (9-12) used two kills and a block to earn a 1-0 advantage.
Set two was altogether different as the Greyhounds dominated. UIndy vastly out-hit the Wildcats .400 to -.069 and more than doubled Northwood's score.
The final two sets featured a lot of free volleyball as both took more than the traditional 25 points to decide. The third set encompassed 20 ties and 11 lead changes as the Hounds came back from 22-20 deficit to take the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
More of the same followed in the fourth as Indianapolis needed 31 points to finally defeat the Wildcats. UIndy fought off five set points from NU and used back-to-back
Cheneta Morrison kills to close out the match.
Five Hounds compiled at least eight digs, led by sophomore
Lyndsay Callahan's personal-high 31. The Chicago native also garnered team highs in kills (14), attack attempts (48) and aces (2).
Freshman
Courtney Anglemyer totaled 10 kills and a season high-tying four blocks. Senior
Beth Robbins had 56 assists and eight digs and junior libero
Kyleigh Turner added 25 digs.
After the event, the coaches voted Morrison to the 12-member all-tournament team. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native finished with 33 kills in 11 sets played, including six block assists and a pair of sevice aces.
