ROMEOVILLE, Ill.- With its sweep win in Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal match, the University of Indianapolis volleyball team earned a trip to the conference semifinals, with a 3-0 victory against a strong Rockhurst squad. UIndy broke the Hawks' nine-match win streak in a 25-19, 26-24, 25-23 win at Neil Carey Arena to extend its league-best GLVC tourney semifinal appearance streak to seven.
Neither team held more than a three-point advantage through the bulk of the opening set. But with the score knotted at 19, the Greyhounds ran off six straight points to seize a 1-0 lead. Rockhurst (22-11) called a pair of timeouts to little avail during the surge.
UIndy (28-8) scored 10 of the first 15 points to start the second frame. The Hawks battled back to tie it at 12 apiece and went on to take a 19-16 edge, but the Greyhounds forced another tie with a 4-1 mini run. After four more ties, UIndy managed to score the final two points to take the set 26-24 and earn a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was another close one, but UIndy again came out on top. The Hounds went up 16-15 and did not relinquish the lead to go on to the 25-23 match-clinching win.
All-GLVC First Team honoree
Lyndsay Callahan (pictured) had a large hand in the win. The sophomore hitter notched her team-high 15th double-double with 16 kills and 19 digs while hitting a robust .438. Conference Player of the Year
Beth Robbins contributed 52 assists, seven digs and two aces while freshman
Abby Merritt compiled a .303 hitting percentage and 13 kills.
Friday's previous two quarterfinal matches did not go
exactly to plan. West Division champs Missouri-St. Louis downed Bellarmine in straight sets, but Southern Indiana pulled the upset with a five-set victory against 24th-ranked Northern Kentucky.
In a rematch of last year's GLVC final, Indianapolis takes on top-seeded and 25th-ranked Lewis in the semis at 8:30 pm ET Saturday night.
