On tap: UIndy matches-up with Ferris State this Saturday in another Homecoming tilt. After dropping a 17-12 decision to Northwood on its homecoming last Saturday, the Hounds will look to earn their first conference win and keep the Bulldogs winless in GLIAC play.
Series history: Ferris owns a 16-11-1 all-time mark against Indianapolis, including a 31-24 win last year at Key Stadium (Oct. 11). The road team has won each of the last four meetings and 15 of the 28 wins have gone to the visiting squad.
About Ferris State: The Bulldogs have lost five straight and are winless in league play. Last Saturday, FSU lost to Michigan Tech in the “Battle at the Ballpark”, a game that was played at Fifth-Third Ballpark, the home of Minor League Baseball's West Michigan Whitecaps. Only one game has been decided by a single possession, a 17-10 loss to top-ranked Grand Valley State on Sep. 19.
About FSU Head Coach Jeff Pierce: Pierce is in his 15th season at the helm of the Bulldog program, guiding FSU to a 91-69 mark in that time span. If UIndy wins Saturday, it would mark just the fifth time that Ferris suffered a losing season under Pierce.
About UIndy Head Coach Joe Polizzi: Polizzi, now in his 16th season, is 81-87-1 in his tenure at UIndy. Polizzi has collected eight winning seasons in that time, including three of the last four.
Regional Rankings: The first edition of the NCAA Super Regional 3 rankings were released Monday, and UIndy has the distinction of playing four of those teams. Five GLIAC teams are ranked, including: Grand Valley State (2), Saginaw Valley State (6), Wayne State (7), Findlay (8) and Northwood (9).
National Rankings: Several Greyhounds find themselves in the national rankings through six weeks. Ryan Forney, on the strength of a 69-yarder for a TD earlier in the season, sits just outside the punt return average category, falling short of the needed 1.2 punts per game average. As a team, however, UIndy ranks 2nd in D-II with a hefty 21.33 ypr average. Craig Ray is tied for 31st in total tackles per game (9.5). Erick Kumming cracked the national stats and ranks 37th in the country with a 38.89 yards per punt average.
On a Long “Leach”: Sophomore WR Joe Leach leads the team in receptions (24) and receiving yards (319), but registered his first TD last Saturday. Rob Doyle hooked-up with Leach for a 67-yard score in the Hounds' first possession at Northwood, helping Leach go over the 100-yard mark in receiving for the second time this season. (101- vs. KWC, 103 @ Northwood).
High “5”: Sophomore QB Rob Doyle threw for 278 yards at Northwood Saturday, marking the third time he's gone over the 250+ yard plateau this season. The last Greyhound QB to register three 250+ games in a season was Casey Gillin, who did it three consecutive years (2005-07). Matt Kohn did it seven times in his record-setting 2003 campaign.
Hounds on Video: The Greyhounds are again scheduled to be on television this season with expanded coverage being provided on the UIndy Television Network.
