Ashland 2, UIndy 1
Ashland 3, UIndy 1 (11 inn.)
INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy and Ashland baseball teams combined for just seven runs in two games Saturday, with the Greyhounds losing both contests of the doubleheader at Greyhound Park. UIndy (5-5) fell 2-1 in the day's opener, and then dropped a 3-1 decision in 11 innings in the nightcap.
A squeeze bunt and a pair of Greyhound errors in the top of the seventh gave Ashland the 2-1 win in game one, with Mike Quinn reaching on an error at shortstop, stealing second and then advancing to third on a UIndy error at second base. Quinn came home on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Eric Pirtz to give the Eagles the winning run.
Ashland (3-2) tallied its first run in the top of the first inning, with a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jacob Petkac plating Tyson Rowland. The Eagles threatened in their half of the sixth inning, with Austin Ritson doubling to right with one out. UIndy hurler
Jordan Tiegs promptly struck out the next Eagle and then induced a ground out to third to strand Ritson.
The Greyhounds got on the board in the third inning, with
Adam Akin coming around to score after singling up the middle. Akin came around on a ground ball to short by
Chase Kittinger after stealing second and advancing to third after the Eagle catcher's throw went into centerfield.
Designated hitter
Ben Sondgeroth had two of UIndy's five hits in game one, while Tiegs (1-2) took the loss on the mound for the Greyhounds. The senior tossed 6.2 innings, surrendering two unearned runs, striking out five and walking two.
Neither team scored a run through the first three innings in the nightcap, with Ashland breaking the scoring drought in the top of the fourth. The Eagles plated one run on three singles to put themselves ahead 1-0.
UIndy scored the tying run in the sixth inning, with Kittinger starting the offense with two outs with a single through the right side. Sondgeroth (pictured) followed with an RBI double to score Kittinger.
The score stayed knotted 1-1 until the 11th inning, when Ashland took advantage of a pair of walks by Greyhound reliever
Vince Saisi, scoring two runs for the win.
Cory White came on in relief of Saisi and allowed the two inherited runners to score on back-to-back RBI singles.
Saisi (1-1) was saddled with the loss in one-third of an inning of work. Kittinger led the offense with three hits in the game.
The two teams will meet again for a single game tomorrow at Greyhound Park, with the first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
