INDIANAPOLIS-  The University of Indianapolis defense squandered just 171 yards of total offense while the Greyhound offense got key contributions from newcomers in a 31-3 win over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan at Key Stadium Thursday night.  The opening night win featured a pair of freshman backs that looked impressive and a special teams unit that blocked a field goal for a score that put the game away.

Sophomore Joe Leach finished the night with eight catches for 101 yards and had a score called back due to penalty in a breakout performance.  Rob Doyle engineered the offense, throwing for a career-high 260 yards on 24-for-33 passing with two scores and a pick.

Collin Coffer was one of four Hound defenders with eight total tackles and added a 79-yard blocked kick return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.  Max Davis, Tyler Peterman and Craig Ray all had eight tackles as well, holding the pass-happy KWC offense to just 66 yards for the entire game.

The first quarter was scoreless, but the Hounds registered 17 points in the second stanza alone to grab a 17-0 lead at the break.  Jace Morrison got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard with a career-long 45-yard field goal that bounced off the right upright and through for a 3-0 score.

Six minutes later, Joumeel McLaurine scampered 50 yards on a screen pass to pay dirt for a 10-0 advantage.  The play came on a third-and-27 from midfield as Doyle swung the ball to the freshman and he juked his way to the far sideline and into the clearing.  Mar'Quone Edmonds hauled-in a nice five-yard fade pattern with 3:40 to go in the half and the offense began to pick up steam.

KWC (0-1) struck first in the second half, however, driving 11 plays for 45 yards in 6:04 before Richard Fangman's 41-yard field goal to inch with two touchdowns.

McLaurine had his second TD of the night early in the fourth quarter, punching one in from a yard out for a convincing 24-3 margin.  The finals blow came when Coffer blocked and gathered a field goal attempt and raced untouched down the visitor's sidelines 79 yards for the final tally at 31-3.

Patrick Bourne handled most of the workload in the Greyhound backfield and had 70 yards on 18 carries.  McLaurine added 23 yards on the ground on seven carries and 45 more yards receiving on four catches.  Leach had a couple of eye-opening catches among his game-high eight grabs.  Shortly after snaring a one-handed catch on a ball behind him, he later hauled-in a ball over his shoulder and stayed in-bounds for a 43-yard catch in the third quarter.

UIndy (1-0) will open its conference season next Saturday, hosting Grand Valley State University.  Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Key Stadium.
