UIndy finishes fourth at Midwest Classic

The Greyhound wrestling team finished fourth at the annual Midwest Classic, behind a championship-winning effort from senior Lynn Panko at 285.

UIndy earned a total of 104.0 points during the two-day tournament. Wisconsin-Parkside won the event with 127.0 points, Newberry took second with 117.5 points and Adams State placed third with 110.0 points total.

Panko (pictured) kept his unblemished record at the tournament on day two, taking a pair of wins en route to the championship of the 285 bracket. The top-seeded Panko won his first bout 5-1 against four-seeded Jeff Schossow of Adams State, putting him in the title match. Panko bested the bracket's two-seed, Jared Little of Northern State, 2-1 to take the title. With his two wins on the day, Panko finished the tournament 5-0, and is also a perfect 13-0 on the 2009-10 season.

Alex Johns and Bryce Givens both took third place in their respective brackets for the Greyhounds. Johns, the six-seed in the 125 bracket, went 3-0 on day two of the tournament. He defeated seven-seed Nick Wiesjahn of Findlay 6-2 in the third place bout. Givens went3-0 on the day and took third in the 157 field with a come-from-behind 12-10 win against two-seeded Joey Deaguero of Adams State in the third-place match.

The Greyhounds placed four additional wrestlers, with Casey Kenney taking seventh place in the 133 bracket, David Lopez finishing sixth at 149, Jake Holler taking fifth at 165 and Cody Wittkamp placing sixth in the 197 field.

Josh Hensley, the 141-pound champion from Adams State, was named the Michael Horton Most Outstanding Wrestler. Hensley went 4-0 with a pair of technical falls, a major decision and a pin on the way to winning the 141 title.

UIndy returns to action Saturday at the Cincinnati Duals, and returns home to the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center next Wednesday for a dual meet with Calumet College of St. Joseph.
