ROMEOVILLE, Ill.- The GLVC 's biggest volleyball rivalry was renewed Sunday, as the 11th-ranked Lewis Flyers topped No. 19 UIndy 3-1 in the conference tournament final. The two-hour affair featured an amazing 32 ties and 17 lead changes until the Greyhounds ultimately fell 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, and 25-22.
The LU win avenges the loss sustained by the Flyers in last season's GLVC final, as the Hounds swept Lewis on its own floor in the 2009 title match. The arch rivals have hooked up in each of the previous four conference tourneys, including three of the last four finals.
After dropping the first set 25-18, the Hounds responded by taking the second 26-24. They led by as many as six early, but the host Flyers came back to earn set point at 24-23. However, UIndy answered with three straight kills – two coming from
Kourtney Crawford – to even the match at one apiece.
The heated third set featured 11 ties and six lead changes, as neither team wanted to go down 2-1. But Lewis found a way, breaking a 22-22 tie with a 3-1 mini-run to put the Greyhounds' backs against the wall.
The fourth set was just as close, with 12 ties coming in the race to 25. UIndy looked to extent the match after fighting for a 22-20 edge, but a couple of Greyhound attack errors and a service ace earned the home team a one-point lead and forced a timeout.
The Greyhound offensive attack would not find the floor again, as Lewis took the final two points to earn its fourth GLVC crown in the last five years.
All-GLVC performer
Courtney Anglemyer had a great match statistically, compiling a .457 hitting percentage with 18 kills, four block assists and an ace. Crawford finished with 11 kills,
Cheneta Morrison had 51 assists and 13 digs, and
Lyndsay Callahan recorded a match-high 22 digs.
Kristina Hefferan amassed 17 kills Sunday, bringing her GLVC Tournament total to 48.
UIndy now awaits the announcement of the 2010 NCAA Tournament field later tonight. The Greyhounds entered the weekend ranked fourth in the Midwest, as the top eight teams from each region will qualify.
