ROMEOVILLE, Ill.- In a showdown of top-10 teams, the ninth-ranked UIndy volleyball team fell in four sets at No. 10 Lewis Saturday night. It marks the Greyhounds' (7-4, 0-2 GLVC) second straight loss to a Great Lakes Valley Conference team, its first two-match, in-conference skid since October of 2006.
UIndy returned to Neil Carey Arena for the first time since downing Lewis in last year's GLVC Tournament final. The Flyers (9-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set, but the Hounds battled back to eventually tie it at 17. Six more ties followed before a Lewis attack error made it 25-23 UIndy to give the visitors the first-set win.
With the score knotted at 14-14 in the second, Lewis used a 7-1 run to gain control and eventually take the set 25-20.
In the third set, the Flyers again won the race to 25. UIndy trailed most of the frame before forcing the set's lone tie at 17 on back-to-back kills from senior setter
Cheneta Morrison, but Lewis benefited from an ace and two Greyhound service errors down the stretch to go up two sets to one.
The fourth set was a see-saw affair that featured a whopping 14 ties, but with the scoreboard showing a 20-20 stalemate, the home team scored consecutive points to force a UIndy timeout.
The Hounds responded by scoring three of the next four points. UIndy starved off three match points from the Flyers before finally falling 29-27 to seal the win for LU.
