Volleyball runs winning streak to seven

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. --
Kourtney Crawford led the way with eight kills and four blocks to lead No. 24 University of Indianapolis volleyball past Illinois Springfield, 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-15), on Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match.

The Greyhounds' (9-4, 7-1 GLVC) seventh consecutive victory keeps them in first place in the GLVC East. Meghan Binkerd hit .714 with five kills, 26 assists and two digs against the Prairie Stars (2-13, 1-7 GLVC). Hannah Kelzer connected on all five of her attacks in the third set to hit 1.000, while Courtney Anglemyer and Kristina Hefferan added five kills of their own and Anglemyer led all players with five blocks. Amy Oldenburg's 11 digs was also a match high.

UIS was led by Kellee Mahaffay with a match-high nine kills.

UIndy limited the Stars to .010 attacking with 25 kills and 24 errors, while countering with 37 kills and .274 attack percentage.

Springfield opened the match by leading 5-1 in the first set, but UIndy came back with a 15-4 run to take a seven-point lead, 16-9, after a kill by Arielle Knafel. The Prairie Stars scratched back within three, 22-19, but kills by Hefferan and Binkerd stopped the momentum and UIndy took the set, 25-19, on an attack error.

UIndy hit .143 with 11 kills to start the match, while UIS hit -.029 with nine kills and 10 errors.

Three consecutive errors by UIS put UIndy up five, 7-2, and forced a timeout to start the second set. The Greyhounds continued to pull away and took an 11-point lead, 19-8, after a Hefferan kill to salt away the second set. Kills by Kristina Kerrigan and Crawford settled the second set, 25-13.

UIndy's defense limited UIS to negative attacking again, -.097, with just six kills, while Crawford was a perfect 5-of-5 attacking for the Hounds.

The Greyhounds raced to another big lead, 20-9, in the third set and ended the match on a kill by Kelzer, 25-15.

UIndy hit .483 with 16 kills to close out the Prairie Stars.

The Greyhounds wrap up their weekend road trip by taking on Quincy (6-6, 4-4 GLVC) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
