#22 UIndy splits two matches on first day of Mizuno Crossover

The No. 22 UIndy volleyball team split its two matches on the opening day of the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center. In the morning, the Greyhounds (13-5) defeated Northwood, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14), but then fell in the nightcap to No. 8 Hillsdale, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23), to have their 11-match winning streak snapped.

Kristina Hefferan hit .435 with 13 kills and eights digs, while Kristina Kerrigan added 11 kills, to lead No. 22 UIndy volleyball past Northwood, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14), in its first match of the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center.

Meghan Binkerd set the offense to a .319 attack percentage with 37 assists and eights digs, while the defense limited the Timberwolves (8-9) to .186 attacking behind four blocks from Julia Watkins and two each by Binkerd, Kourtney Crawford and Courtney Anglemyer.

The Greyhounds (13-4) won their 11th consecutive match this season and seventh consecutive match in the Crossover event.

Northwood was led by Tatjana Rajic with 11 kills attacking .421 and Angie Sparling with .364 with 10 kills. Rajic also added five blocks.

The Greyhounds fell behind, 8-5, to open the match, but came back to take the lead, 10-9, on a kill by Kerrigan. NU scored the next point, but a kill by Watkins kept UIndy in front and it eventually built the lead to five, 19-14, after an ace by Hefferan and block by Anglemyer. The Wolves closed to within three, 23-20, but a kill by Crawford and ace by Kimberly Trojan sealed the set, 25-20.

UIndy hit .400 with 13 kills, while Northwood hit .323 with 15 kills. The Hounds countered with three aces against one for Northwood.

The Greyhounds trailed again early, 12-8, but went on a 7-2 run to take the lead, 15-14, after three consecutive errors by Ally Hoomaian of Northwood. The Wolves tied the score twice, but an ace by Anglemyer put UIndy up three, 20-17, and forced a timeout. Northwood responsed with a 3-0 run to tie the score at 20 and again at 21. A kill by Kerrigan and block by Crawford and Watkins put UIndy up two, 23-21, and they ended the set on back-to-back Hefferan kills, 25-22.

Each team hit under .200 with UIndy at .129 with 11 kills and Northwood at .156 with 12 kills. Each team had seven attack errors, but Northwood missed five serves to only two misses by UIndy.

UIndy didn't mess around and built a 9-4 lead in the third set and didn't look back. The lead eventually grew to 10, 20-10, and the Hounds put the match away with just one match point on a kill by Hannah Kelzer, 25-14.

UIndy finished strong with 18 kills attacking .429 and holding Northwood to 10 kills and a .103 attack percentage.

Hillsdale Recap

Kerrigan led all players with 19 kills and hit .429, along with 11 digs, while Hefferan hit .367 with 14 kills, but the Hounds couldn't slow a more diversified Hillsdale attack.

The Chargers hit .356 with three players recording more than 11 kills, led by Ashlee Crowder with 16 kills attacking .324 and Clara Leutheuser hitting .480 with 14 kills and four blocks.

Both offenses were clicking with Hillsdale hitting .356 with 54 kills, while UIndy hit .281 with 50 kills, led by Binkerd with 40 assists, six digs and three kills.

A kill by Kerrigan gave UIndy a four-point lead, 19-15, late in the opening set, but Hillsdale fought back to tie at 21. Hefferan came back with a kill to keep UIndy in front, 22-21, but the Chargers rattled off three in a row to get to set point. A Crawford kill held them off once, but Hillsdale took the first set on the next point, 25-23.

Each team had 18 kills with Hillsdale hitting .366 and UIndy at .302.

The Chargers built a 13-5 lead to start set number two, but UIndy rallied to tie at 19 after three consecutive Kerrigan kills and one by Watkins. Hillsdale hung on to score the next three points and hold off UIndy, 25-21.

Hillsdale hit .308 with another 18 kills, while UIndy had 14 kills and hit .233.

The Greyhounds led 7-4 to start the third set, but an 8-0 run by Hillsdale put them up five, 12-7. UIndy battled back to tie at 17 after an Anglemyer kill, but couldn't gain the lead. The Greyhounds tied the score at 18, 19 and 20, but Hillsdale scored four in a row to break the last tie. UIndy saved three match points, but couldn't save the fourth, 25-23.

Hillsdale closed with another 18 kills to hit .395, while UIndy had seven kills from Kerrigan and six from Hefferan on the way to hitting .314 with 18 kills.

UIndy closes the tournament against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

The Greyhounds return to the court at 6:30 p.m. against No. 8 Hillsdale (15-2), which defeated Wisconsin-Parkside, 3-0, in its first match.
