Greyhounds conclude tournament with convincing sweep of Saginaw Valley State

GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament

AURORA, Ill. --
No. 22 UIndy volleyball swept Saginaw Valley State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-10), on Saturday at the Great Lakes Center to conclude play with a 2-1 record in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament. With the help of the Greyhounds' (14-5) victories, the Great Lakes Valley Conference won the traveling trophy over the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 29-19 record over the course of the tournament.

Junior Kristina Kerrigan was named to the GLVC All-Tournament Team after she finished the tournament with six kills, three digs and two blocks against the Cardinals (10-8).

The Hounds were led by Kourtney Crawford with nine kills and .500 attack percentage, while seniors Courtney Anglemyer and Kristina Hefferan each had eight kills. Anglemyer hit .438 with three blocks and Hefferan hit .250 with five digs and two blocks.

Meghan Binkerd led UIndy to hitting .326 with 29 assists, seven digs and two blocks. Amy Oldenburg led the Hounds with 10 digs and Julia Watkins had four blocks as they helped hold SVSU to .010 attacking with 29 kills and 28 errors.

The Cardinals were paced by Annie Buxton with eight kills, but she was held to .000 attacking. Andrea Meram dished 23 assists and Laura Ward had 12 digs.

The match opened tight with eight ties, but UIndy broke an 11-all deadlock with a 7-0 run. The lead grew to 10, 22-12, after four consecutive errors by the Cardinals and UIndy ended the set on back-to-back kills by Crawford and Hefferan.

UIndy hit .387 with 14 kills, including six and .667 attacking by Anglemyer, while Saginaw hit .086 with 11 kills.

Back-to-back aces by Sara Lowe put the Cardinals up two, 7-5, but UIndy went on a 5-2 run to take the lead, 10-9, on a Kerrigan kill. SVSU earned two more ties, but UIndy slowly pulled away to take a five-point lead, 20-15, after a block by Watkins and Kerrigan. Hefferan gave UIndy the second set, 25-19, with a kill on the second set point.

UIndy delivered 12 kills and hit .281, while Saginaw had 13 kills, but also 12 errors to hit .028. Crawford hit .833 on 5-of-6 hitting in the second set.

There were six ties to start the third set, but UIndy broke a tie at seven with a 5-0 run capped by a block from Watkins and Binkerd. The Greyhounds continued to pull away and ended the set on a 12-1 run capped by an ace from Oldenburg on match point, 25-10.

UIndy hit .310 in the final set with 12 kills and three aces from Oldenburg, Courtney Roach and Kimblery Trojan. The defense held Saginaw Valley to -.088 attacking with five kills and eight errors.

The Greyhounds go back to GLVC play next weekend with a road trip to Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday and Southern Indiana on Saturday. UIndy is currently 10-1 in the league, one match ahead of Northern Kentucky, Southern Indiana and Missouri S&T in the race to host the 2011 GLVC Championships.
