Volleyball grounds the Lady Hawks to stay in first place

Kristina Hefferan led all players with 18 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season at No. 24 UIndy volleyball defeated Quincy, 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15), to run its winning streak to eight in a row and stay in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division.

Kristina Kerrigan and Kourtney Crawford each added 10 kills for the Greyhounds (10-4, 8-1 GLVC) against the Lady Hawks (6-7, 4-5 GLVC) for the program's 12th consecutive win in the all-time series.

Meghan Binkerd tallied 38 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season and libero Amy Oldenburg led all players with 18 digs.

Briann Joslin hit .360 with 13 kills and five blocks, three solo, for Quincy, while Lyndsay Kooi had 38 assists, 14 digs and four kills and Damaris Linker finished with 16 digs.

The biggest difference in the match came at the service line where Quincy had 18 errors and one ace, while UIndy had two aces and four errors. The Greyhounds finished with one more kill, 51-50, while hitting .210 against .189 for Quincy.

The Greyhounds scored the first three points of the match on the way to a 15-7 lead after kills by Hefferan and Kerrigan. A block by Courtney Anglemyer and Binkerd pushed the Greyhounds' advantage to 10, 23-13, and they closed the set on a Quincy attack error, 25-17.

UIndy hit .195 with 14 kills, while Quincy had 10 kills and hit .158.

The second set had nine ties in the early going until a 4-0 run by UIndy caused a Quincy timeout, 13-9. The Lady Hawks came back within one, 14-13, but a service error stopped the momentum and UIndy went back up four, 18-14, after a Hefferan kill. Quincy came back within two, 20-18, but UIndy closed the set on a 5-2 run to take a two-set lead, 25-20.

Each team had 13 kills in the set, but UIndy hit .267, while Quincy hit .226. Hefferan led the Hounds with six kills in the second.

Quincy was determined to extend the match by opening the third set with a 9-4 run. The Hounds fought back within one, 10-9, but Quincy hung on and pushed its lead back to five, 17-12, when head coach Jody Rogers called timeout. UIndy was able to trim the lead to a pair, but never pulled closer as Quincy extended the match , 25-19.

UIndy hit .073 with 10 kills and seven errors, while Quincy hit .275 with 16 kills.

The Greyhounds didn't mess around in the fourth set by taking a 6-1 lead that grew to an eight-point edge, 17-9. The Lady Hawks were never able to threaten and UIndy closed the match with kills from Julia Watkins and Crawford.

UIndy hit .355 with 14 kills to close out Quincy, which hit .103 with 11 kills.

The Greyhounds return to Ruth Lilly Center for a pair of matches next weekend against Maryville (4-9, 1-8 GLVC) on Saturday at 5 p.m. and GLVC West second place Missouri-St. Louis (10-5, 6-3 GLVC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
