Volleyball cages the Pumas to win in-state rivalry

Kristina Kerrigan hit .333 with 18 kills and 10 digs to lead No. 23 University of Indianapolis volleyball past in-state rival St. Joseph's, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-12), at Ruth Lilly Center in a match televised by Hometown Sports Indiana.

Setter Meghan Binkerd had 36 assists, nine digs and three kills for the Greyhounds (16-6, 12-2 GLVC), which hit .288 as a team. Julia Watkins added six kills, .357 attacking and was in all five of UIndy's blocks against the Pumas (10-13, 3-11 GLVC). Hannah Kelzer hit .385 with five kills, two digs and two blocks, while Kourtney Crawford added eight kills and four digs.

The Greyhounds held the Pumas to .060 attacking with 27 kills and 20 errors, while racking up 63 digs to just 46 for SJC. Amy Oldenburg led all players with 16 digs, while Kimberly Trojan added nine digs off the bench.

The Pumas were led by Sharon Freund with seven kills and 13 digs.

UIndy broke a three-all tie in the first set with a 5-0 run that forced a St. Joseph's timeout after three consecutive errors by Maggie Walters. The run continued to a 10-1 stretch that put UIndy up nine, 13-4, after another SJC error. The lead grew to 10, 18-8, after a kill by Watkins and UIndy put the set away on an error by Courtney Bast, 25-17.

UIndy had 16 kills, all assisted by Binkerd, and held the Pumas to -.045 attacking with seven kills and nine errors.

The score was tied at seven when UIndy went on a 7-0 run to take control, including kills by Kerrigan, Watkins, Kelzer and an ace by Binkerd. The lead remained around seven and the Greyhounds put the set away with a block by Kelzer and Watkins followed by another SJC attack error, 25-15.

UIndy hit .286 with 16 kills, including eight and .438 attacking by Kerrigan, while Binkerd had another 14 assists. SJC tallied 11 kills on the way to hitting .114.

The Pumas held a couple of early leads to start set three, but an 8-1 run put the Greyhounds back in command, 14-7. A kill by Brittany Anglemyer assisted by Camille Cherry pushed the lead to 11, 21-10, and back-to-back kills by Anglemyer and Kenzie Bruggeman ended the match, 25-12.

The Hounds hit a match-high .412 with 16 kills as all available players saw action, while SJC was limited to nine kills and .138 attacking.

The Greyhounds remain at Ruth Lilly Center to wrap up the home schedule on Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 14 Northern Kentucky (21-3, 11-3 GLVC) and Saturday at 3 p.m. against Bellarmine (11-10, 5-9 GLVC) for Senior Day.
