Kerrigan reaches 1,000 kills in victory over Maryville

Kristina Kerrigan reached 1,000 career kills against Maryville.

Junior Kristina Kerrigan notched her 1,000th career kill on her second kill of the match on the way to a match-high 13 kills, .417 attack percentage, five digs and two blocks as No. 23 UIndy volleyball defeated Maryville, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21), for its ninth consecutive victory.

Courtney Anglemyer hit .333 with eight kills and three blocks for the Greyhounds (11-4, 9-1 GLVC) to stay in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division and overall standings. Meghan Binkerd had 23 assists, six digs, two kills and two aces, while Kristina Hefferan led all players with 14 digs, six kills and three blocks. Freshman Julia Watkins controlled the net with a match-high five blocks against the Saints (4-10, 1-9 GLVC).

UIndy hit .296 with 42 kills, while holding Maryville to .099 attacking with 33 kills. UIndy also had nine blocks and 50 digs.

The Saints were led by Ashlee Brockenbrough with 10 kills and Hannah Seitter with 13 digs.

A block by Hefferan and Watkins opened a 4-1 lead that UIndy built to 10-4 after a Kerrigan kill in the first set. The Saints were able to come back within four multiple times, but UIndy pulled away and took the first set on a Binkerd ace, 25-16.

UIndy hit .367 with 14 kills, four each by Kerrigan and Anglemyer, while Maryville had 13 kills, but hit .103.

A block by Watkins and Kourtney Crawford gave the Greyhounds a seven-point lead, 14-7, midway through the second set. UIndy continued to pull away and another ace on set point by Binkerd clinched a 2-0 lead, 25-14.

UIndy hit .407 with 14 kills in the second frame, while holding Maryville to 10 kills and .094 attacking.

The third set was much closer with nine ties and five lead changes. Maryville built a three-point lead, 11-8, but UIndy came back to take the lead, 14-13, on a kill by Hannah Kelzer. The Saints hung around and took a two-point lead, 17-15, but UIndy countered with a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead, 20-17, after a Kerrigan/Anglemyer block. Maryville rallied to pull within one, 21-20, but then missed the serve and Kerrigan ended the match, 25-21, with an emphatic kill.

UIndy had 14 kills hitting .171 and held Maryville to 10 kills and .100 attacking.

The Greyhounds return to Ruth Lilly Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. to play GLVC West preseason favorite Missouri-St. Louis (11-5, 6-3 GLVC). The Tritons played at St. Joseph's on Saturday evening.
