SOMERS, Wis. -- Kristina Hefferan led No. 21 UIndy volleyball with 18 kills and career-high 18 digs in a come-from-behind victory, 3-2 (26-28, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11), on Friday night at DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Greyhounds' (19-6, 15-2 GLVC) come back from trailing, 2-1, sets up a showdown with No. 19 Lewis (22-5, 14-3 GLVC) tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET with the right to host the 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament on the line. A win by UIndy and the tournament will come to Ruth Lilly Center, while multiple scenarios are in play for both the Greyhounds and Flyers to host if Lewis takes the victory.
Kristina Kerrigan tied her career high with five blocks, in addition to 14 kills and eight digs, while
Courtney Anglemyer hit .455 with 11 kills, career-high-tying three aces, three blocks and two digs.
Meghan Binkerd totalled 44 assists, 12 digs, five kills and two blocks, while her classmate,
Julia Watkins, tied her career high with six blocks.
The Rangers (14-15, 10-7 GLVC) were led by Bridget Nickel with 21 kills and 10 digs, while Stacie Bower had a career-high 37 digs. Adrienne Uthe controlled the net for Parkside with nine blocks.
The Greyhounds hit .227 with 59 kills and 20 errors and the Rangers hit .187 with 66 kills and 31 errors. The Rangers had more blocks (12-11) and more digs (82-80), but weren't as accurate serving. UIndy had four aces and five errors to six aces and 13 errors for UWP.
After forcing the fifth set, UIndy jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set with an ace by Hefferan and kill by Anglemyer. A kill and back-to-back aces pulled the Rangers within two, 8-6, but kills by Kerrigan and Hefferan put UIndy back up four, 10-6 and forced a timeout by the Rangers. A kill by Hefferan gave UIndy match point and the teams traded missed serves to clinch the match for the Crimson and Grey, 15-11.
UIndy hit .600 with nine kills in 15 attempts, led by Hefferan hitting 5-of-7 and 2-of-2 attacking by
Kourtney Crawford. Anglemyer had two blocks, an ace and a kill in her only attempt of the set.
The Hounds scored the first four points of the match, but Parkside turned things around with an 8-2 run to take the lead, 8-6. The tide turned with a 9-4 UIndy run to put it up three, 15-12, but again the hosts came back to regain the lead, 20-19. The Rangers still led, 21-20, when UIndy went on a 4-1 run to get to set point, 24-22, after a Kerrigan kill. UWP rallied again with three points in a row, but then missed a serve on set point. Hefferan followed with a kill to give UIndy a third set point, but then Kerrigan missed a serve to tie the score and Parkside stole the set on back-to-back blocks, 28-26.
UIndy hit .174 with 14 kills to 16 kills and .196 attacking in the opening set. Parkside also had three aces and five blocks in the first set.
The Rangers held small leads through much of the first half of the second set up to 16-14. The Hounds started a 4-0 run with a kill by Kerrigan, followed by a block from Watkins and Kerrigan and two more kills by Crawford and Watkins, 18-16. The Rangers came right back to tie, but Kerrigan and Hefferan had back-to-back kills for a 7-3 run to even the match, 25-21, after Crawford's kill on the second set point.
UIndy hit .227 with 15 kills and Parkside hit .130 with 14 kills.
The Rangers took a 6-3 lead to start the third set, but UIndy came right back to score the next three points. The Greyhounds couldn't take the lead and the Rangers were able to hold them off the rest of the way to win the third set, 25-19.
UIndy's offense couldn't get going with eight kills and seven errors to hit .026, while Parkside hit .282 with 16 kills.
Parkside missed the serve to start the fourth set that propelled UIndy to a 9-4 lead. The Rangers pulled within two, 16-14, but four points in a row capped by a Binkerd kill kept Wisconsin-Parkside at bay, 20-14. UWP scored the next two points, but another 5-0 run evened the match, 25-16, with a block by Watkins and Kerrigan.
UIndy makes the trip to Romeoville, Ill., to play GLVC East preseason favorite Lewis on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a game that will be televised on Lakeshore Public Television (
channel listings).
