2011 GLVC Volleyball Tournament Central
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The No. 21 University of Indianapolis volleyball team fell at No. 19 Lewis, 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-13, 25-22), on Saturday at Neil Carey Arena in the final regular season match for both teams.
Despite the loss, the Greyhounds (19-7, 15-3 GLVC) earned the right to host the 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament next weekend based on going 4-3 in sets against the Flyers (23-5, 15-3 GLVC) during the regular season. Both teams had a better overall set winning percentage than GLVC West champion Missouri S&T, leading to the head-to-head set comparison between the GLVC East rivals.
Senior
Kristina Hefferan led all players with 16 kills and 17 digs, while
Kristina Kerrigan had 14 kills and 12 digs.
Courtney Anglemyer hit .429 with 11 kills and two blocks and
Kourtney Crawford also had 11 kills, six digs and three blocks.
Setter
Meghan Binkerd finished with 49 assists and nine digs, while
Amy Oldenburg led all players with 23 digs.
The Flyers were paced by Danielle Mount with 14 kills and .375 attack percentage and Leigh Barea had 51 assists. The tandem of Kelly McConkey and Amy Choi had 22 and 20 digs, respectively.
The Flyers hit .281 with 58 kills and held UIndy to .203 attacking with 53 kills. The Flyers had 10 blocks and 82 digs to counter the Greyhounds' four blocks and 79 digs.
Lewis broke open a 10-all tie in the first set with a 9-1 run to take an eight-point lead, 19-11, that was enough to hold off UIndy, 25-18. The Flyers hit .380 with 20 kills and UIndy was at .207 with 14 kills.
A solo block by Kerrigan staked UIndy to an early five-point lead, 9-4, but Lewis came back to cut the margin to one, 12-11. A kill by Hefferan gave UIndy a cushion and they built the lead back to six, 21-15, after a Crawford kill. Crawford struck again on the second set point, 25-19, to even the match and clinch home court advantage in the GLVC Tournament for the Greyhounds.
UIndy hit .359 with 20 kills and held Lewis to 10 kills and .167 attack percentage. Kerrigan and Hefferan combined for 14 of the Greyhounds' kills.
The Flyers came out with a 6-1 run to start the third set and didn't look back in dominating the Hounds, 25-13. The Hounds hit .029 with eight kills and seven errors, while Lewis hit .387 with 14 kills.
Lewis had another quick start, 8-4, to the fourth set, but UIndy was still within two, 14-12, after a ball-handling error. The Flyers built the lead back to five, 21-16, but UIndy made another late run to pull within two, 24-22, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The Hounds hit .195 with 13 kills and the Flyers hit .186 with 14 kills. Lewis also had two aces to just one for UIndy in the set.
The GLVC Tournament will begin at 8 a.m. at Ruth Lilly Center next Friday with the first of six matches in the 10-team event that will determine the automatic NCAA Tournament bid from the conference. UIndy will play at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of the 10:30 a.m. match between No. 8 Rockhurst and No. 9 Quincy.
