BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The UIndy women's basketball team gave the Indiana Hoosiers all they could handle in an exhibition contest at Assembly Hall Tuesday night. The Greyhounds had two chances to tie the game in the final 21 seconds but couldn't quite get past the bigger Hoosiers.
“I'm really proud of your effort tonight,” said Head Coach
Constantin Popa. “I thought we fought very hard.
“We showed a lot of patience offensively. We played together and everybody contributed.”
UIndy took its first lead with 15 minutes left in the game. After trading leads the rest of the way, the Hounds led by one at the final media timeout, but IU managed to create a four-point cushion with 90 seconds remaining.
A free throw from senior
Megan Gardner, followed by a defensive stop set up the final act, as UIndy found itself down 48-45 with the ball and 21 ticks to go.
Five seconds later, sophomore
Katy McIntosh took it to the hole for the layup and the foul but couldn't complete the three-point play.
IU got a transition bucket after the missed free throw, leaving 11 seconds for the Hounds. UIndy didn't get a clean look, however, as
Kristin Turner's 3-point attempt was off the mark.
Scoring was at a premium through the early going; The teams combined for just 11 points through the opening seven minutes and 14 points through the first 10.
Both squads continued to search for an offensive rhythm until a 3-pointer from Kristina Stauere snapped a four-minute scoring drought for the Hoosiers and put the home team up 19-10. IU upped the lead to 11 with less than three minutes to go, but the Hounds closed the half on an 8-2 run to make it 27-22 at the break.
The surge was led by Gardner, who connected on a pair of deep threes late in the first half.
Gardner nailed another triple on the first possession of the second half to inch the Hounds even closer. The IU lead later dwindled to nil when
Eliza Wortman's deuce knotted it at 29 apiece. A possession later, McIntosh drove the lane to give UIndy its first lead at 31-29.
The Greyhounds went toe-to-toe with the Hoosiers from that point, as neither squad led by more than three points for the next 14 minutes.
Despite facing a starting front line that went 6-6, 6-3 and 6-0, the Greyhounds outrebounded their hosts 43-42. Three Hounds had at least eight boards, led by
Sydney Weinert's 11.
McIntosh scored a team-high 12 points, followed by Gardner's 10.
With two exhibitions under its belt, UIndy begins regular-season play this weekend at the Convocation Center Tip-off Nov. 12-13., hosted by California University of Pennsylvania. The Hounds will face the host Vulcans Saturday at 1 p.m., and will then play the winner of Saturday's Ashland/Minnesota State contest at either 1 or 3 p.m. on Sunday.
