Hounds cruise past Cedarville, 83-52

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS-  The UIndy women's basketball team notched its sixth straight win Saturday afternoon at Nicoson Hall, as the Greyhounds downed visiting Cedarville, 83-52.  The Hounds (6-2) shot a season-high 57 percent from the floor, as junior Kristin Turner (pictured) matched her career high with 19 points.

UIndy was able to attain its lofty shooting percentage by effectively feeding the post.  The Hounds shot a gaudy 72 percent from two-point range, with junior forward Sydney Weinert connecting on eight of her nine attempts.

“Our game plan, as far as the offense was concerned, was to get the ball inside,” said Head Coach Constantin Popa.  “I thought (Cedarville) might have problems defending the post, and obviously we finished well around the basket too and that helped.

“Then when you get everybody to focus on the inside game, it opened up shots from the outside and we hit those shots too, so we had a good shooting performance and good balance inside and outside.”

The Hounds also did a good job defensively by limiting the Lady Jackets' transition game.  Cedarville (6-2), who averaged nearly 80 points per game heading into the day, shot just 32 percent versus the Greyhounds, including just 23 percent (5-for-22) from behind the arc.

Commented Popa:  “They want to run.  That's their game.  We watched a few games they've played this year and that's their game.  They'd rather get out and run than be in the half court so we wanted our guards to get back on defense quickly and we were able to limit easy lay-ups that way.

“We followed the game plan well and communicated.  When we communicate, people are shooting 30 percent against (like tonight) and that's the bottom line.”

UIndy never trailed on the day, thanks in part to holding its guest to just two points in the opening 5:50 of the contest.  The Hounds led by as many as 15 in the first half, with the margin reaching a high of 33 late in the game.

“It's a good win,” concluded the first-year head man.  “It was a region game for us so that was nice.  Everybody got a chance to play, everybody contributed and we played as a team.  As long as we stick together and stick to the game plan, we should be okay.”

All five Greyhound starters scored in double figures, as both Turner and Weinert scored a game-high 19.

Senior Megan Gardner remained hot from behind the arc as her four 3-pointers netted the Bishop Chatard grad 12 points.  Both junior Nickole Gonser and sophomore Katy McIntosh finished with 11.

Gonser added nine rebounds and six assists, while Weinert blocked three shots.

Saturday marked the end of a six-game home stand for UIndy, as the Hounds will play four straight games away for Nicoson Hall.  The Greyhounds are off this coming weekend before they travel to Division-I Cincinnati Monday, Dec. 19.
